(RV)Hampden-Sydney Welcomes Lynchburg On Saturday At 2 p.m.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. --  Hampden-Sydney College, receiving votes in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, welcomes the University of Lynchburg in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon, January 17, at 2 p.m. on the new Tony Shaver Court in Diaz Arena at the renovated Kirby Field House. The host Tigers are 9-5 overall, 3-2 in the ODAC, while the visiting Hornets are 9-6 overall, 4-2 in the ODAC. The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, while available to watch at flocollege.com.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the seventh-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 116-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee University. Kimbrough is 115-49 at the College, ranking sixth in program coaching wins, while his current winning percentage (.701) ranks second all-time. He is a two-time National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III District 6 Coach of the Year (2022-23, 2023-24), was the 2022-23 ODAC Men's Basketball Bob Johnson Coach of the Year and the 2024-25 D3hoops.com Region 6 Coach of the Year.

2025-26 Coaching Staff
Coach Kimbrough is aided this season by second-year associate head coach Bryson Gibson, also in his seventh year with the program, fourth-year assistant coach Carson Long, along with first-year assistant coach Zach Hinton.

Scouting (RV)Hampden-Sydney
H-SC dropped a 62-47 conference road decision at Roanoke College on Jan. 14. The Tigers have been led by a trio of sophomore guards in Santana Lynch (Dallas, TX) (12.1 points, 7.7 rebounds, 57% FGs), Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC) (11.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 3.4 assists, 19-3FGs) and Peter Moye (Charlotte, NC) (11.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 22-3FGs). Senior guard Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) (9.6 points, 28-3FGs), sophomore guard Tugg Bizzelle (Baltimore, MD) (8.6 points, 10-3FGs), senior forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) (7.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.4 assists) and junior center Alex Cannon (Loganville, GA) (5.5 points, 6.6 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, 64% FGs) are each contributing significantly, as well. H-SC shoots 45% (378-841) from the field, including 31% (89-285) on three-point field goals, and 65% (188-289) at the free throw line. The Tigers average 73.8 points, and yield 69.6 points, for a +4.2 scoring margin. 

Scouting Lynchburg
Lynchburg, coached by 18th-year head coach Hilliary Scott, lost its most recent game on the road at Virginia Wesleyan University 70-59 on Jan. 14 in Virginia Beach. The Hornets have been led by sophomore forward Jamarcus Brown (18.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, 1.8 blocks, 55% FGs), senior guard Piercen Young (10.7 points, 5.9 rebounds, 12-3FGs) and senior forward Jayson Easton (10.7 points, 3.7 rebounds, 31-3FGs). Lynchburg shoots 45% (424-944) from the field, including 30% (102-342) on three-pointers, and 67% (229-340) at the line. The Hornets average 78.6 points, and yield 71.5 points, for a +7.1 scoring margin.

Series History
H-SC and Lynchburg are playing for the 96th time since formation of the ODAC for the 1976-77 season. The Tigers lead the series at 70-25, including five wins in the last seven games between the two schools. The Hornets, however, eliminated the Garnet & Grey from the 2025 ODAC Tournament with their 72-66 quarterfinal road win on February 26 in Kirby Field House. H-SC won the lone regular season meeting last season by a score of 78-67 on Jan. 4, 2025 in Lynchburg.

NCAA Division III Statistics (Top 15)
H-SC leads Division III in rebound margin (12.6), and ranks seventh nationally in rebounds per game (45.0) and 13th in defensive rebounds (30.6).

H-SC is receiving votes (53) in the week six D3hoops.com Top 25 of Jan. 12. The Tigers are receiving votes for the second-straight week. The Garnet & Grey were ranked 17th in preseason, and have been as high as No. 8 in week two, while ranked 16th in week four (Dec. 15). Defending National Champion and unbeaten Trinity (CT) College (14-0) has remained at No. 1 all season, currently with 624 points and 24 of 25 first-place votes.

Scheduling Toughness
H-SC has played six opponents on the schedule that are currently ranked among the D3hoops.com Top 25, or receiving votes, including No. 3 Emory (GA), No. 5 Randolph-Macon, No. 10 Redlands (CA) and No. 18 UW-La Crosse, while Roanoke and Maryville (TN) are each receiving votes. The Tigers are 1-5 in those games ... then-No. 7 UW-La Crosse (L 77-75 OT), then-No. 2 RMC (L 85-50), then-No. 11 Redlands (L 91-90), then-No. 25 Maryville (W 63-55), then-No. 7  Emory (L 101-73) and (RV)Roanoke (L 62-47).

The Team Three-Point Stat
H-SC has made at least one three-point field goal in 536 consecutive games, dating back to a 2005 home game vs. Emory & Henry (12/3, 0-1 3FGA). Ironically, the Tigers won that high-scoring contest ... 130-99 without making a three-pointer.

2025-26 Team Captain
Leading the Tigers is senior guard Grayson Schultz (Moseley), who is a second-year team member serving in the leadership role for the first time. He was a team manager during his first two years at the College, before joining the team for 2024-25. Grayson is the son of Glenn and Paige Schultz and is majoring in economics and business at the College.

Program History
H-SC is competing in its 116th-year of basketball during 2025-26. The Tigers have an overall program record of 1,549-1,107 since beginning in 1908. H-SC has posted 64 winning seasons, 18 seasons with at least 20 wins, six seasons with at least 25 wins, has won a record 11 ODAC Tournament Championships.

NCAA Tournament History
H-SC has made 17 NCAA Tournament appearances since 1989, winning at least one game in 14 of the 17 years, while compiling an overall NCAA Tournament record of 27-18. The Tigers advanced to the Final Four in 1999, 2003 and 2024, and to the National Championship in 1999 and 2024. H-SC was National Runner-Up in 2024, falling to Trine (IN) 69-61, as well as in 1999, falling to UW-Platteville 76-75 in double-overtime. The Tigers fell to Gustavus Adolphus (MN) 79-68 in the 2003 National Semifinals. H-SC advanced to the Elite Eight in 1995, 1998, 1999, 2003 and 2024, while reaching the Sweet 16 in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2024 and 2025. The Tigers have hosted 24 NCAA Tournament games since 1992, compiling an impressive record of 19-5.

Former Tigers Now Division I Head Coaches
H-SC currently has two former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 16th year at UC Irvine and Ryan Odom '96 is in his first season at Virginia and his 10th season as a DI head coach (UMBC, Utah State, VCU). Through Jan. 15, Turner was 333-193 at UCI (12-6 this season) and Odom was 216-119 overall, including 15-2 this season at (16/16)UVA, 52-21 in two years at VCU, 44-25 in two years at USU and 97-60 in five years at UMBC. Griff Aldrich '96 is in his first season as the associate head coach at UVA after serving as head coach at Longwood the past seven seasons where he was 127-100 overall. Additionally, Ryan Silverfield '03 was named the 35th head football coach at Arkansas on November 30. Silverfield was 50-25 in six years at Memphis, including 8-4 this season.

Up Next
H-SC plays two ODAC games on the road next week, including at Randolph College on Wednesday, Jan. 21, at 7 p.m. in Lynchburg, and at Averett University on Saturday, Jan. 24, at 2 p.m. in Danville. The Tigers return home to welcome conference opponent Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. in Diaz Arena. It will be both Garnet & Grey Night and the program's Coaches vs. Cancer contest in support of the NABC and American Cancer Society efforts to increase cancer awareness and promote healthy living through year-round awareness efforts, fundraising activities, and advocacy programs.
