Jake Moore (Dry Fork) hit a grand slam home run with four RBIs in the first game, as Hampden-Sydney College split an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament Quarterfinal doubleheader on the road at (RV)Randolph-Macon College on Saturday in Ashland. Junior right-hander
Sterling Austin (Petersburg) gained the pitching win in relief in the 5-4 nightcap, while freshman left-hander
Noah Lewis (Crewe) started and took the mound setback in the 17-5 opener for the visiting and #7 seed Tigers (19-22) against the host and #2 seed Yellow Jackets (26-13). The game two victory by the Garnet & Grey forces a game three in the opening weekend Best-of-Three series and is scheduled for Sunday, May 4, at 12 p.m. in Ashland.

In game one, H-SC scored five runs on seven hits with four errors … scoring the five runs in the sixth inning. RMC scored 17 runs on 19 hits with no errors … scoring two runs in the second inning, three runs in the third, one run in the fourth, five runs in the fifth, one run in the seventh and five runs in the eighth.

In the first, junior center fielder and team captain
Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (0-3) struck out swinging to begin the contest. Junior designated hitter
Matthew Arnold (Danville) (1-4) singled up the middle with one out, before Harris (0-4) lined out to center field and Moore (2-4, 4 RBIs) grounded out to first base.

In the second, junior right fielder and team captain
Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) (1-3) began the at-bat with a double to left center field. Sophomore third baseman
Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (1-3) followed with a sacrifice bunt to the mound to advance Sanford to third, but senior shortstop
Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (1-4) popped out to first and sophomore second baseman
Sam Vick (Capron) (0-2) struck out looking to end the early threat. RMC had a two-run home run in the second for a 2-0 deficit.

In the third, sophomore catcher
Noah Leonard (Troutville) (0-3) popped out to second, Wilson struck out swinging and Arnold lined out to left field. RMC added another two-run homer in the third toward a 5-0 deficit.

In the fourth, Harris grounded out to third before Moore tripled to left center field; however, Sanford struck out swinging and Howell ground out to second to end another scoring opportunity. RMC had an RBI single in the fourth for a 6-0 deficit.

In the fifth, Masterson and Vick each flied out to right center field, and Leonard struck out swinging. RMC scored five runs on three hits in the fifth, including a two-run double, for an 11-0 margin.

In the sixth, Wilson walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, ahead of a walk to Arnold. Harris was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs … and Moore promptly slammed the first pitch over the fence in right field for a grand slam home run, scoring Wilson, Arnold and Harris. It was Moore's first homer of the season, and the third round-tripper of his career. Sanford drew another walk and Howell followed with a single through the left side to move Sanford to second. Masterson flied out to right field for the first out, but freshman
Gavin Smith (Mechanicsville) (1-2, RBI) pinch-hit for Vick and single to center field to score Sanford with Howell moving to third. Leonard popped out to first and Wilson, batting for the second time during the at-bat, was hit by a pitch to load the bases once-again. Arnold struck out swinging, but the Garnet & Grey were on the scoreboard, trailing 11-5.

In the seventh, Harris lined out to first, Moore lined out to left and Sanford grounded out to first. RMC added a run in the seventh courtesy of a fielding error for a 12-5 deficit.

In the eighth, Howell flied out to left field before Masterson singled to right center field. Smith, who stayed in the game at second base, then flied out to left field for the second out. Senior
Christian Chambers (Midlothian) pinch-hit for Leonard and struck out swinging to end the at-bat. RMC scored five runs on five hits in the eighth, including another two-run double, along with a throwing error toward the final margin.

In the ninth, Wilson flied out to left field, Arnold struck out swinging and Harris struck out swinging, as well, to end the opening game.

Lewis (3-2) started for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 4.0-plus innings for the setback, allowing eight hits and nine runs, seven earned, with seven strikeouts and two walks. Sophomore right-hander
Logan Benton (North Chesterfield) tossed 1.0 inning in relief, yielding two hits and two runs, both earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Sophomore left-hander
Adam Emhoff (Chesapeake) pitched 2.1 innings, allowing seven hits and four runs, three earned, with two strikeouts and three walks. Junior right-hander
Jacob Williams (Chesapeake) tossed two-thirds of an inning, yielding two hits and two runs, both earned, with one strikeout and one walk. Overall, the four Tigers combined for 11 strikeouts in the opener.

In game two, H-SC scored five runs on 10 hits with no errors … scoring three runs in the first inning and two runs in the eighth. RMC scored four runs on nine hits with two errors … scoring one run in the fourth inning and three runs in the fifth.

In the first, Harris (2-5, RBI) singled through the left side to begin the contest and scored when Arnold (1-5, RBI) followed with an RBI double down the right field line. Arnold advanced to third on a wild pitch before Moore (1-4, RBI) promptly added his second triple and fifth RBI of the day, plating Arnold. Moore crossed the plate when Sanford (0-4, RBI) followed with an RBI sacrifice fly to right field, and Howell (1-3) then doubled to left center field, but Wilson (0-4) lined out to third base and Masterson (0-4) flied out to center field as the Tigers had an early 3-0 advantage.

In the second, Smith (2-4) lined out to left field before Leonard (3-4) singled down the right field line. Harris then struck out swinging for the second out and Arnold lined out to shortstop.

In the third, Moore was called out on strikes before Sanford reached on a throwing error. Howell then flied out to right field with Sanford later stealing second base, but Wilson was called out on strikes, as well.

In the fourth, Masterson fouled out to the left side ahead of Smith hitting a single up the middle and Leonard reaching on a single to left field. Unfortunately, Harris and Arnold each fouled out to the right side to end the threat. RMC got on the scoreboard in the fourth with one run on two hits for a 3-1 contest.

In the fifth, Moore drew a lead-off walk and appeared to be picked-off at first base but was able to slide under the tag at second for a stolen base. Sanford popped out to second and Howell struck out swinging, and it appeared that Moore had stolen third base with two outs, but Wilson was ruled out at the plate on batter interference. RMC added three runs on two hits, including a two-run triple, in the fifth to go ahead 4-3.

In the sixth, Masterson popped out to first on the first pitch and Smith flied out to right center field, before Leonard singled to left center field with two outs. Harris then lined out to left field for the third out.

In the seventh, Arnold flied out to right field, while Moore and Sanford each struck out swinging.
In the decisive eighth, freshman third baseman
Jack Wells (Sutherland) (0-1), a defensive replacement in the seventh, drew a lead-off walk. Wilson fouled out to the catcher attempting to bunt, before Wells stole second base but was out at third on a fielder's choice off the bat of Masterson. Smith then doubled down the right field line, advancing Masterson to third, and Masterson scored when Leonard reached on a throwing error. Smith crossed the plate when Harris provided a clutch two-out RBI single through the right side, but Harris was out at second on a fielder's choice off the bat of Arnold … but the Tigers regained the lead at 5-4 and it stood for the come-from-behind triumph to play another day.

In the ninth, Moore grounded out to shortstop, while Sanford and Wells each struck out swinging. RMC did have runners at second and third with two outs in the ninth, but Austin got the last out on a strikeout swinging.

Junior right-hander
Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) started for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 3.2 innings, scattering four hits and one run, earned, with one strikeout and three walks. Austin (4-5) tossed the final 5.1 innings for the win, allowing five hits and three runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and one walk.

A win on Sunday would advance H-SC to the double-elimination ODAC Baseball Tournament Championship Series weekend on May 8-10 at Capital One Park in Tysons, Virginia.
