BOX SCORE

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. -- Senior left fielder Christian Chambers (Midlothian) had a two-run double, and sophomore pinch-hitter Brandon Shelhorse (Fairfax) hit a solo home run, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a 16-3 non-conference baseball decision on the road at the University of Mary Washington on Sunday afternoon in Fredericksburg. Junior right-hander Sterling Austin (Petersburg) started on the mound and took the pitching setback for the visiting Tigers (18-20) against the host Eagles (24-12) in the seven-inning contest due to the run rule. UMW is receiving votes in this week's ABCA/NCAA Division III Coaches Poll.

H-SC scored three runs on four hits with four errors … scoring two runs in the first inning and one run in the sixth. UMW scored 16 runs on three hits with no errors … scoring one run in the first inning, two runs in the third, four runs each in the fourth and fifth, and five runs in the sixth.

In the first, junior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) was hit by a pitch to begin the game and advanced to second on a single up the middle by sophomore third baseman Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (1-2). Wilson was out at third when senior first baseman and team captain Grayson Harris (Moseley) reached base on a fielder's choice with Howell moving to second, and both runners advanced on a ground ball out off the bat of sophomore designated hitter Jake Moore (Dry Fork) (1-3). Chambers (1-2, 2 RBIs) followed with his two-out, two-run double to right center field that scored both Howell and Harris for an early 2-0 lead.

In the sixth, Shelhorse (1-1, RBI) slammed his first home run of the season while pinch-hitting for an 11-3 deficit. It was the second career homer for Shelhorse.

Unfortunately, the Eagles scored 13 runs during their final three at-bats toward the run-rule decision.

Austin (1-3) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 3.1 innings, allowing six hits and five runs, four earned, with two strikeouts and two walks. Freshman right-hander Colin Mabe (Alton) recorded one out, yielding two hits and two runs, one earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Sophomore left-hander Adam Emhoff (Chesapeake) pitched 1.0 inning, allowing two hits and four runs, one earned, with no strikeouts and two walks. Senior right-hander Dylan Robbins (Mechanicsville) also tossed 1.0 inning, yielding no hits and four runs, one earned, with two strikeouts and four walks. Junior right-hander Ashton Armour (Great Falls) recorded the final out, but allowed three hits and one run, unearned, with no strikeouts and no walks.

H-SC is scheduled to welcome Christopher Newport University to close the regular season on Monday, April 28, at 4 p.m. on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
