Hampden-Sydney Takes Dramatic Walk-Off Home Win Past Marymount 4-3

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Junior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) hit a game-winning two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the ninth inning, while senior left fielder Christian Chambers (Midlothian) and freshman second baseman Sam Vick (Capron) each had two hits, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a thrilling come-from-behind 4-3 non-conference baseball home win past Marymount University on Saturday evening on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Junior right-hander Sterling Austin (Petersburg) pitched the final two scoreless innings to gain the pitching victory for the host Tigers (16-18) on Senior Day against the visiting Saints (18-15).

H-SC scored four runs on eight hits with two errors … scoring two runs each in the fourth and ninth innings. MU scored three runs on five hits with three errors … scoring two runs in the fifth inning and one run in the sixth.

In the fourth, senior first baseman and team captain Grayson Harris (Moseley) reached base on a fielding error to begin the at-bat and scored when Chambers (2-3, RBI) followed with a run-scoring double down the right field line into the corner. Chambers advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by senior right fielder and team captain Christian Lancaster (Danville), and scored on an RBI single up the middle by Vick (2-4, RBI) for a 2-0 advantage.

The visitors scored their three runs in the fifth and sixth, and took a 3-2 lead into the bottom of the ninth.

In the decisive ninth, Vick reached on an infield single to get it started … and advanced to second when sophomore pinch hitter Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (1-1) singled through the left side. Sophomore designated hitter Jake Moore (Dry Fork) followed and reached on a fielder's choice, though Vick was out on the play at third base, while junior pinch runner Greer Farr (Southern Shores, NC) advanced to second. After a fly-ball out, Wilson (1-4, 2 RBIs) provided his game-winner … the two-out, two-run double to the wall in left field with both Farr and Moore—scoring from first—crossing the plate for the dramatic walk-off triumph on senior day.

Junior pinch hitter Matthew Arnold (Danville) (1-1) and sophomore catcher Noah Leonard (Troutville) (1-3) each collected hits on the day, as well, for the Tigers.

Senior right-hander Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 3.0 scoreless and no-hit innings with one strikeout and no walks. Freshman left-hander Noah Lewis (Crewe) followed with a scoreless inning, yielding one hit with two strikeouts and one walk. Senior right-hander Justin Reynolds (Virginia Beach) pitched 1.0 inning, allowing two hits and two runs, both earned, with one strikeout and one walk. Sophomore left-hander Adam Emhoff (Chesapeake) pitched 1.0 inning, as well, yielding one hit and one run, unearned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Senior right-hander Dylan Robbins (Mechanicsville) also tossed a scoreless inning, yielding one hit with one strikeout and no walks—in his first appearance this season. Austin (3-4) pitched the final 2.0 scoreless and no-hit innings with three strikeouts and no walks for the victory.

H-SC is scheduled to play on the road at Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday, April 23, at 3 p.m. in Virginia Beach. Please note the recent date change for this road contest.
