Emerson Rice (Columbia, SC) took singles and doubles victories, while senior
Henry Singleton (Richmond) took the decisive singles victory to help Hampden-Sydney College take a 4-3 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) match against Randolph College.
The Tigers started off earning a point with wins in two of the three doubles matches, starting with a 6-2 win in the top slot from Foster and sophomore
Thomas Davis (Charlotte, NC). Taking the second win was the third slot partnership of freshman
Jonathan Fogle (Midlothian) Rice with a 6-3 result. The final doubles match saw the pairing of juniors
Casey Coffey (Midlothian) and
Dillon McReynolds (Abingdon) fall 6-4.
In singles action, Foster led things off with a 6-3, 6-1 win in the first singles slot and Rice followed him up in the fourth singles slot with a 6-0, 6-0 straight sweep. McReynolds fell in the second singles match by a score of 6-0, 6-0 and Davis fell in the third singles match 6-0, 6-2. In the sixth match, Fogle fell by a 6-3, 6-1 scoreline to knot the match a 3-3, with one match left to finish. That final and decisive match featured Singleton in the fifth singles spot, as he jumped ahead after winning set one in a tiebreaker 7(8)-6(6), but was defeated in the second set 6-4. In the third and decisive set, Singleton took a massive 6-3 win to clinch his match and the overall match, 7(8)-6(6), 4-6, 6-3.
The Tigers will be back in action when they return home to play Virginia Wesleyan University in ODAC action on Friday, March 28. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. at the H-SC Tennis Courts.
