Grayson Harris (Moseley) added an insurance run to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 3-1 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball victory over nationally ranked No. 3 University of Lynchburg on Wednesday evening on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Sterling Austin (Petersburg) started and handled the first six innings of action, while junior
Alex Fitz-Hugh (Chesterfield) threw the final three innings to earn the win for the Tigers (10-9, 4-3) against the visiting Hornets (15-3, 4-1).
H-SC scored three runs on six hits with no errors … scoring one run in the first, seventh, and eighth innings. Lynchburg scored one run on seven hits with three errors … scoring one run in the first inning.
In the first, junior
Jack Wilson (Petersburg) (1-3 2R) reached on an error by the third baseman and advanced to second on the errant throw. Harris (1-3 RBI) then moved Wilson to third on a sacrifice bunt and Arnold (1-4 RBI) singled through the right side of the infield to bring home Wilson and tie the game.
In the seventh, sophomore
Ian Martin (Martinsville) walked and advanced to second as sophomore
Jase Howell (Portsmouth) reached on an error by the centerfielder after a strikeout by the Tigers. Senior
Christian Chambers (Midlothian) then came in to run for Martin and scored when Masterson (1-3 RBI) singled to center to give the Tigers the lead.
In the eighth, after a strikeout by H-SC, Wilson tripled to right center, and with the infield in Harris singled up the middle to drive in Wilson and double the H-SC advantage at 3-1.
Junior
Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) and Howell had the other two hits for H-SC.
Austin started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 6.0 solid innings, scattering six hits and one run, earned, with four strikeouts and no walks. Fitz-Hugh (3-1) got the win, throwing the final three innings, allowing one hit and no runs, with two strikeouts and two walks.
H-SC will play a doubleheader on the road at ODAC opponent Washington and Lee University on Saturday, March 22, at 12 p.m. on Cap'n Dick Smith Field, located on the campus of WLU.
