Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) scored a game-high 18 points, adding five assists, and junior forward and team captain
Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) had 17 points and six rebounds, but nationally-ranked No. 10 Hampden-Sydney College dropped an 83-72 decision to No. 15 the University of Redlands (CA) in the third round of the NCAA Division III Men's Basketball Championship Sectionals (Sweet 16) on Friday evening at the John A. Paulson Center on the campus of New York University in New York, New York. The Tigers trailed 44-31 at halftime and 66-40 with 12:02 remaining, before a late rally fell just short, as the Garnet & Grey used a 28-9 run to close to within 75-68 at 2:44. H-SC completes its season with a final record of 23-6, while the Bulldogs improved to 25-4 and were led by Kendrick Currey with 15 points and a game-high six assists, and Chozen Amadi with 14 points.

Tonight wasn't our night, but the culture that has been built with Tiger basketball is lasting. It hurts to lose; but that's because these guys pour their heart and soul into it. We are so thankful for the young men on this team and their families."
H-SC took an early 11-10 lead just 3:49 into the contest as Brazil scored seven quick points, including a three-point field goal and one of his patented coast-to-coast layups, while senior guard
Nick Shryock (Davidson, NC) added an offensive rebound basket and freshman guard
Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC) scored inside, as well. The Tigers led 19-17 at 13:10 after junior guard and team captain
Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) connected on a three-pointer, freshman guard
Tugg Bizzelle (Baltimore, MD) scored inside and Brazil added another three-pointer. Redlands scored the next 10 unanswered points during a 13-2 run to lead 30-21 with 7:39 on the clock, but the Garnet & Grey battled back with an 8-3 run to close to within 33-29 at 4:15 after a three-pointer by freshman guard
Peter Moye (Charlotte, NC)—Bizzelle scored the first five points with a steal and layup, and one, along with a coast-to-coast layup of his own. The Bulldogs, however, closed the half on an 11-2 run to lead 44-31 at halftime.
Redlands extended its advantage to begin the second half, outscoring H-SC 22-9 with eight points from Amadi to lead 66-40 with 12:02 remaining. The Tigers refused to quit and began battling back, using an 11-2 run with seven points by Fernald to make it 68-51 at 9:06. A three-pointer straightaway from Brazil at 5:34 had the Garnet & Grey within 73-60, and following back-to-back baskets down low by Fernald—the second turning into an old-fashioned three-point play—Brazil connected on another three-pointer from the left wing and H-SC was within 75-68 with 2:44 on the clock, culminating the 28-9 run. The Tigers got another stop on the defensive end, but Brazil's three-point attempt at the other end was in-and-out … and the Bulldogs secured their win with 6-14 free throws over the final 2:19, including 3-4 by Currey, who also added a late layup. Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) did make his final three-point attempt as a Tiger with 12-seconds left toward the final margin.
Brazil led H-SC with his game-high 18 points, including 10 in the first half, with four three-pointers, adding his five assists, along with two steals. Fernald finished with his 17 points for the Tigers, including 14 in the second half, adding his six rebounds. Stickney contributed nine points, four rebounds, four assists and a game-high three steals. Bizzelle scored seven points, adding two steals, with Radcliffe adding five points, and Shryock and Moye each adding four points—Shryock added a game-high nine rebounds, as well. H-SC shot 40% (27-67) from the field, including 27% (7-26) on three-pointers, and 61% (11-18) at the free throw line.
Currey led Redlands with his 15 points, adding five rebounds and his game-high six assists. Amadi finished with 14 points for the Bulldogs. Omari Ferguson had 13 points and Dayvon Gates added 12 points. Redlands shot 53% (31-58) from the field, including 49% (9-19) on three-pointers, and 44% (12-27) at the line.
As mentioned, H-SC completes the season with a final overall record of 23-6, and the 23 wins mark the third-straight season with 20-plus wins, also the 18th 20-win season in program history–the first time since 1996-99 that the Tigers have accomplished three consecutive 20-win campaigns, including 22-7 in 2022-23 and 31-3 last season when finishing as the National Runner-Up. The Garnet & Grey were also ranked among the D3hoops.com Top 10 for the final 11 weeks of the season, and were No. 11 in the final NCAA Power Index (NPI).H-SC could return as many as 16 team members for 2025-26.
NCAA Tournament Notes
H-SC has made 17 NCAA Tournament appearances since 1989, winning at least one game in 14 of the 17 years, while compiling an overall NCAA Tournament record of 27-18. The Tigers have advanced to the Sweet 16 eight times, including in 1992, 1994, 1995, 1998, 1999, 2003, 2024 and 2025.
Career Watch
Adam Brazil completes his career as the only Tiger in the 115-year history of the program ranked among the Top 10 in career points, assists, steals, three-pointers and games played. Adam is ninth scoring with 1,586 career points in 122 career games, fifth in career assists with 390 and 10th in career steals with 151 … while his 240 career three-pointers and 122 career games are both believed to be among the Top Five all-time, as well.
