HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore
Thomas Davis (Charlotte, NC) took wins in both singles and doubles, but Hampden-Sydney College fell 4-3 in non-conference action to Washington (MD) College on Saturday afternoon at the H-SC Tennis Courts.
The Tigers grabbed an early lead in the match taking two of the three doubles matches to earn a point, starting in the top doubles slot where senior
Barrett Foster (Virginia Beach) and Davis were forced into a tiebreaker, but won the tiebreaker 7-4 to take the match 7(7)-6(4). Juniors
Casey Coffey (Midlothian) and
Dillon McReynolds (Abingdon) took the second win in the second doubles slot with a 6-2 victory. The third slot and finals doubles match saw the duo of senior
Taylor Fox (Virginia Beach) and freshman
Jonathan Fogle (Midlothian) fall 6-2.
Davis grabbed a singles win in the third slot to go along with his doubles victory, taking the first set 6-2 and the second set 6-3 to take the match. Senior
Henry Singleton (Richmond) put the Tigers one point away from winning the overall match, battling in a three-set match in the sixth singles slot, taking the first set 6-4, but dropping the second set 6-4. In the third set, Singleton cruised to a 6-2 win to take the match 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Foster started out the top singles match flying to a 6-3 victory in the first set, but dropped the second set 6-3, forcing a third decisive set. In a battle of a third set, Foster was defeated 6-4 to drop the match 6-3, 3-6, 4-6. In the second singles match, McReynolds fell behind after the first set 7-5, but battled back with a 7-5 second set victory to force a third set, where he was beaten 6-4 to drop the match 5-7, 7-5, 4-6. Emerson Rice (Columbia, SC) fell behind early in the fourth singles match, dropping set one 6-2 before battling back to take a 7-5 win in the second set. In the third set, Rice was beaten 7-5 to drop his match 2-6, 7-5, 5-7. In the fifth singles match, Fox was beaten 6-0, 6-1.
The Tigers will be back in action on Monday, March 10, when they play both Ohio Northern University and Maryville (TN) College. The match against Ohio Northern is set to begin at 7:30 a.m. and Maryville is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. in Orlando, Florida.
