NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College fell 7-0 to Christopher Newport University in non-conference on Saturday night in Newport News.

The Tigers won the top doubles match of the evening, as senior Barrett Foster (Virginia Beach) and sophomore Thomas Davis (Charlotte, NC) grabbed a 7-6 victory. In the second doubles match, juniors Casey Coffey (Midlothian) and Dillon McReynolds (Abingdon) fell 6-4. In the third and final doubles match, the pair of senior Henry Singleton (Richmond) and freshman Jonathan Fogle (Midlothian) were beaten by a 6-4 scoreline.

The top singles match was a tough match between Foster and his opponent, as he took the first set 6-3, but the second set went in favor of the Captains 6-4, forcing a third set. In the third set, Foster was defeated 6-4 to drop the match 6-3, 4-6, 4-6. McReynolds was bested in the second set by a 6-0, 6-0 scoreline, with Davis falling in the third slot 6-1, 7-6. Freshman Emerson Rice (Columbia, SC) dropped his singles match 6-1, 6-3, and Singleton took a 6-2, 7-5 loss in the fifth slot. In the final singles match, Fogle dropped his first set 6-2, but battled in the second set to take it 6-1 and force a third set. The final tiebreaker was close in the third set, but Fogle just fell short, losing the tiebreaker 11-9 to drop the final set and match.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, February 15, when they play host to Mary Baldwin University as well as Division I College of Charleston (SC). The matches are scheduled to take place at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. respectively, at the H-SC Tennis Courts.
