HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College took wins in all three doubles matches and all six singles matches to take a 7-0 non-conference victory over Southern Virginia University on Wednesday night at the H-SC Tennis Courts.
The Tigers started off doubles action with a pair of 6-3 victories, with senior
Barrett Foster (Virginia Beach) and sophomore
Thomas Davis (Charlotte, NC) grabbing victory in the top doubles match, and juniors
Casey Coffey (Midlothian) and
Dillon McReynolds (Abingdon) grabbing the win in the second slot. In the final doubles match, senior
Taylor Fox (Virginia Beach) and freshman
Jonathan Fogle (Midlothian) took a 6-4 win to sweep doubles and secure a 1-0 lead going into singles matches.
Foster led off singles action in the top slot, battling to win the first set 7-5 before taking a much more comfortable 6-1 set two win to claim the match 7-5, 6-1. McReynolds was in command of his match from the start in the second doubles slot, taking the first set 6-2, and following it up with a straight-set 6-0 win. Davis opened the third singles match with a straight-set 6-0 win before taking a 6-2 in the second set to take the match 6-0, 6-2. Freshman
Emerson Rice (Columbia, SC) played a close set one in the fourth singles, but was able to come out with a 6-4 win before grabbing a more comfortable 6-1 win in the second set to take the match. Fox battled in the fifth singles match, coming back to take a 7-5 win in the first set, and then taking control in the second set to take a 6-2 win. The final singles match was a comfortable win for senior
Henry Singleton (Richmond) grabbing a 6-1 win in the first set, followed by a 6-2 win in set two.
The Tigers will be back in action when they take on Washington (MD) College on Saturday, March 1. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the H-SC Tennis Courts.
