Hampden-Sydney Drops Doubleheader To Franklin & Marshall (PA) 11-4, 7-3

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior first baseman and team captain Grayson Harris (Moseley) had three hits and junior third baseman Matthew Arnold (Danville) had two RBIs in the first game, while Harris and senior right fielder and team captain Christian Lancaster (Danville) each had two hits in the second game, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped a non-conference baseball doubleheader at home to Franklin & Marshall (PA) College on Sunday on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Junior right-hander Sterling Austin (Petersburg) took the pitching setback in the 11-4 opener, while freshman left-hander Bobby Holihan (Yorktown) took the mound loss in the 7-3 nightcap for the host Tigers (1-3) against the visiting Diplomats (3-0).
 
In game one, H-SC scored four runs on seven hits with two errors … scoring three runs in the sixth inning and one run in the eighth. F&M scored 11 runs on 15 hits with three errors … scoring one run each in the first and second innings, two runs in the fourth and seven runs in the decisive eighth.
 
In the sixth, junior center fielder and team captain Jack Wilson (Petersburg) was hit by a pitch to begin the at-bat and advanced to second on a single to left field by sophomore second baseman Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (2-5) with both runners advancing a base when Harris (3-5) reached on an infield bunt single to load the bases with no outs. Sophomore designated hitter Jake Moore (Dry Fork) (RBI) followed with a fielder's choice RBI ground ball to second base to plate Wilson and a throwing error on the play kept the bases loaded. Arnold (1-3, 2 RBIs) provided a sacrifice fly RBI to center field to score Howell, and Harris crossed the plate when Moore was out attempting a steal of second base as the Tigers were within 4-3.
 
In the eighth, Harris led-off with a double to left field and scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Arnold with one out to provide for the final margin.
 
Austin (1-1) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 3.2 innings for the loss, allowing seven hits and four runs, three earned, with one strikeout and one walk. Sophomore left-hander Adam Emhoff (Chesapeake) followed with 2.0 scoreless inning, yielding two hits with one strikeout and one walk. Junior right-hander Jacob Williams (Chesapeake) pitched 1.2 innings, allowing four hits and seven runs, all earned, with no strikeouts and three walks. Freshman right-hander Davis Neighbor (Williamsburg) tossed the final 1.2 scoreless innings, yielding two hits with two strikeouts and one walk.
 
In game two, H-SC scored three runs on 11 hits with four errors … scoring one run each in the fourth, fifth and eighth innings. F&M scored seven runs on nine hits with no errors … scoring four runs in the first innings, two runs in the third and one run in the seventh.
 
In the fourth, Wilson (1-3) singled up the middle begin the at-bat and later stole second with one out, advancing to third on a passed ball. He later scored with two outs when sophomore catcher Noah Leonard (Troutville) (2-4, RBI) provided a clutch RBI single to right field, making it a 6-1 contest.
 
In the fifth, Lancaster (2-5) singled to left field with two outs before Wilson drew a walk ahead of a run-scoring double to left field by Moore (1-4, RBI), and the deficit was 6-2.
 
In the eighth, Wilson once-again walked, this time as the lead-off batter and advanced to second when Moore walked, as well. Junior second baseman and team captain Chase Sanford (Mechanicsville) (1-3, RBI) plated Wilson with an RBI double to left center field to provide for the final margin.
 
Holihan (0-1) started on the mound for the Garnet & Grey and pitched the first 2.1 innings for the loss, allowing seven hits and six runs, three earned, with two strikeouts and one walk. Freshman left-hander Noah Lewis (Crewe) followed with 3.2 innings, yielding one hit and one run, earned, with one strikeout and three walks. Howell tossed the final 3.0 scoreless innings, yielding one hit with three strikeouts and no walks.
 
H-SC will play on the road at (20)North Carolina Wesleyan University on Wednesday, February 26, at 3 p.m. in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
