BOX SCORE

SALEM, Va. --
All-American fifth-year guard and third-year team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) scored a team-high 21 points, but nationally-ranked No. 4 Hampden-Sydney College dropped an 81-72 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) basketball decision on the road at (RV)Roanoke College on Saturday afternoon in Salem. Freshman guard Travis Stickney (Mount Pleasant, SC) added 13 points, while freshman guard Peter Moye (Charlotte, NC) had 10 points off the bench. The Tigers fell behind 15-2 at the start of the game, but led 40-39 at halftime, and 56-49 with 13:20 remaining, before the Maroons closed the contest on a 32-16 run—securing the outcome with 11-12 free throws over the final 2:19. H-SC is now 20-4 overall, 13-2 in the ODAC, while RC is now 19-4 overall, 13-2 in the ODAC, as well—led by Joshua McClary with a game-high 23 points and Gavin O'Malley with 16 points.

"Tough one today," said sixth-year head coach Caleb Kimbrough. "We played some really good ball in stretches, but didn't stay consistent enough defensively over the course of the game. With that said, there wasn't a moment I felt like our guys thought they were going to lose. This group is confident and will certainly bounce back from this one."

H-SC, ranked No. 4 in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25, fell behind 15-2 during the first 3:11 against RC, receiving votes in the national poll, as the Maroons made their first six shots—three of them three-point field goals—two by Jackson Bell. The Tigers regrouped after a timeout and battled back with a 20-8 run to close to within 23-22 at 8:09, getting points from eight different players, including four points from junior forward and team captain Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) along with three-pointers by junior transfer guard and team captain Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) (off the bench) and Moye. The visitors took their first lead at 30-29 with 5:06 on the first-half clock after a coast-to-coast layup by freshman guard Tugg Bizzelle (Baltimore, MD) (off the bench), and the Garnet & Grey led 36-32 after a layup by Brazil. The hosts led 37-36 following another three-pointer at 2:05, but H-SC got a jumper from Radcliffe and two free throws by Fernald to lead 40-39 at halftime.

H-SC continued its momentum to begin the second half, taking its largest lead of the contest at 56-49 with 13:20 left to play after a jumper by Bizzelle. Moye sparked the early second-half run with five points, while Brazil added four and Stickney contributed a three-pointer. RC, however, responded with 13 unanswered points to lead 62-56 at 7:52, getting nine points from McClary. The Tigers fought back with five-straight points from Brazil (two free throws) and Stickney (layup and 1-2 free throws) to get within 62-61 with 4:34 remaining, but that was as close as they would get. The Maroons used an 8-2 run to lead 70-63 at 2:19, getting quick six points from Joshua Morse, including two free throws as the home team made 11-12 free throws down the stretch with Bell making 4-4. The Garnet & Grey could only get to within four points on two occasions during the final minute, including 74-70 after a three-pointer by senior guard Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) (off the bench) and 76-72 after a drive to the basket by Brazil.

Brazil led H-SC with his 21 points, including 4-4 free throws. Stickney added his 13 points along with four assists for the Tigers. Moye had his 10 points in 13 minutes off the bench. Fernald finished with six points, a game-high 11 rebounds and three assists, but was limited by foul difficulties throughout. H-SC shot 39% (24-66) from the field, including 19% (5-26) on three-pointers, and 63% (15-24) at the free throw line.

McClary led RC with his game-high 23 points, adding six rebounds and a game-high six assists. O'Malley added his 16 points along with nine rebounds for the Maroons. Morse finished with 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench, while Bell and Marcus Morgan contributed 11 and 10 points, respectively. RC shot 46% (26-57) from the field, including 25% (4-16) on three-pointers, and 71% (25-35) at the line for the difference in the game.

H-SC had its recent 10-game winning streak stopped and returns home to welcome ODAC member Eastern Mennonite University in the regular season finale next Saturday afternoon, February 22, at 2 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House for Senior Day. The Tigers have secured a Top Four finish during the ODAC regular season, and will host an ODAC Tournament Quarterfinal contest on Wednesday night, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. in Fleet Gym. As a reminder, it's free admission for all regular season home athletic contests at the College.
