No. 4 Seed Hampden-Sydney Falls In The ODAC Quarterfinals To No. 5 Seed Randolph-Macon 9-8

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior Michael Leone (Vienna) scored three goals and fellow classmate Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) scored two goals but Hampden-Sydney College fell to No. 5 seed Randolph-Macon College in the Quarterfinals of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Lacrosse Tournament, Tuesday evening at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring in the first quarter, scoring two unanswered goals over the first eight minutes and 39 seconds. Junior Campion White (Apex, NC) stopped the run with 6:21 remaining in the quarter, as the pass from behind the net by senior Ford Burke (Richmond) skipped past its intended target and into the stick of White for him to rifle a shot into the bottom left corner. Randolph-Macon responded with another goal but O'Brien got one answered with 1:59 remaining as with the shot clock nearing zero he spun and ducked around a defender before faking a shot down low and shooting up and over the goalie for an incredible goal. The Tigers were not finished, as freshman Landon Honig (Glen Allen) beat his man and passed over the sticks of two defenders to find sophomore Davis Mack (Henrico) open for the shot and finish into the top left corner and close the quarter at 3-3.

H-SC got the scoring started in the second and took its first lead of the game as White played a short pass to an open Leone who took two steps to his right and bounced the ball into the back of the net. The Yellow Jackets responded with two goals of their own to take the lead back before Leone tied the game, putting away the pass from senior Drew Duffy (Virginia Beach) on the fastbreak. Randolph-Macon closed the quarter with a goal to go into halftime up 6-5 on the Tigers.

The third quarter was dominated by the Tigers, but only one goal came from it with 10:54 remaining as Leone came from behind the net and around the right side of the crease before shoveling the ball inside the far post to make it 6-6 going into the final 15 minutes.

H-SC grabbed the lead just 1:24 seconds into the fourth quarter, following a caused turnover and ground ball for junior Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) he found junior Gaines Weis (Richmond) up ahead to run the break, and when options were not available quickly he found sophomore Cameron Young (Chantilly) trailing behind the play to bounce it past the goalie. Just over three minutes later, the Tiger lead was two as O'Brien beat his defender with a deke and fired a shot into the top left corner. That was the last goal that the Tigers scored, as the Yellow Jackets answered three unanswered goals with three of their own to take a 9-8 lead and held on as the Tigers unfortunately could not find the equalizing goal.

Leone led the game with three goals and O'Brien added two goals. White scored one goal and one assist, while Young and Mack each scored a goal. Burke, Duffy, Weis, and Honig each had one assist for H-SC. Senior Thomas Harry (Troy) caused three turnovers and grabbed four ground balls and Kilfeather caused two turnovers and grabbed two ground balls.

Senior Peter Smith (Warrenton) played well making 15 saves on 24 shots on target, along with causing a turnover and grabbing two ground balls in the loss.
