Sterling Austin (Petersburg) took the pitching setback for the visiting Tigers (14-18, 8-12) against the host Hornets (23-13, 12-8). Lynchburg is receiving votes in this week's D3baseball.com/NCBWA Top 25, and is the defending NCAA Division III National Champions, as well.
H-SC scored four runs on eight hits with one error … scoring one run in the second inning, two runs in the fifth and one run in the seventh. Lynchburg scored 10 runs on 12 hits with three errors … scoring two runs each in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings, one run in the seventh and three runs in the eighth.
In the second, junior
Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh) reached on a fielding error at shortstop with one out, advanced to third base on a single to left field by senior
Tillman Butler (Culpeper) (1-3) and scored on a bunt single between the mound and first base by freshman
Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (1-2, RBI) for an early 1-0 advantage.
In the fifth, junior
Grayson Harris (Moseley) (1-5) doubled to left field to begin the at-bat and scored when Moore (2-5, 2 RBIs)—the reigning
ODAC Player of the Week—followed with an RBI single to center field. Moore moved to second base courtesy of an error, stole third and crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly RBI to center field by sophomore
Matthew Arnold (Danville) (1-4, RBI) to make it 3-2.
In the seventh, Moore led off with a solo home run to right center field, his second homer of the season, to close the deficit to 6-4.
Austin (2-4) started on the mound for the Tigers and pitched the first 5.1 innings, scattering six hits and five runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and two walks. Junior
Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) recorded two outs, yielding one hit and one run with one strikeout and two walks. Freshman
Hank Blanton (Midlothian) pitched 1.0 inning, allowing two hits and one run, unearned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Freshman
Alex Caruso (Appomattox) tossed the final 1.0 inning, allowing three hits and three runs, all earned, with two strikeouts and one walk.
