Hampden-Sydney Falls 5-4 On The Road At Lynchburg

LYNCHBURG, Va. -- Junior Matt Kendrick (Birmingham, AL) and sophomore Dillon McReynolds (Abingdon) both took singles and doubles victories but Hampden-Sydney College fell 5-4, after an appeal overturned a 5-4 win, against University of Lynchburg in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) action, Friday afternoon at Crosswhite Athletic Club in Lynchburg.

"First and foremost, I'm very excited with how our team performed today, it was a great team win," said Kendrick "It's always nerve racking when you realize the entirety of the match hinges on your ability to play under pressure. I constantly reminded myself during my match that I had been in this situation before and through grit and determination I was about to outlast my opponent and get us a much needed win against a great team."

Sophomore Casey Coffey (Midlothian), and McReynolds took victory in the first doubles match, taking the set 8-5. In the third doubles match, sophomore Tanner Allison (Midlothian), and Kendrick took an 8-5 win. Junior Taylor Fox (Virginia Beach) and his partner freshman Thomas Davis (Charlotte, NC) took an 8-4 loss in the second doubles match to go into singles matches up 2-1.

McReynolds took a win in the second doubles match, winning the first set 6-4, before cruising to a 6-0 win in set two. Junior Henry Singleton (Richmond) followed up the win in the second slot with a win in the third slot, taking the first set 6-0 and the second set 6-1. Kendrick grabbed the fifth match win for the Tigers in the final singles match that finished, taking the first set 7-6 before winning the final set 6(10)-2(6). Fox fell in the top singles match, dropping the first set 6-2, and falling in the second set 6-1. Davis dropped his match in the fourth singles slot, losing the first and second sets 6-1. Coffey dropped the first set in the fifth doubles slot 6-2 but battled back to have a closer set two before ultimately being defeated 6-4.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, March 30, when they travel to play Guilford (NC) College in ODAC action. The match is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m. at the Dorothy Ragsdale McMichael '37 Centennial Class Courts.
