NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College took a doubles victory in its 8-1 defeat to Christopher Newport University, Friday night at James River Country Club. The doubles victory came from the top doubles slot and was an 8-5 result for junior
Barrett Foster (Virginia Beach) and freshman
Thomas Davis (Charlotte, NC).
In the second double action, sophomores
Dillon McReynolds (Abingdon) and
Casey Coffey (Midlothian) fell 8-2. In the final doubles match, the pairing of junior
Henry Singleton (Richmond) and fellow classmate
Taylor Fox (Virginia Beach) were defeated 8-0.
In the top singles match, Foster fell behind 6-1 after the first set and battled hard in set two before ultimately dropping the set 7-5. McReynolds fell by an identical 6-2, 6-2 scoreline, while Coffey dropped the third singles match 6-2, 6-3. Singleton played a close first set 6-4, before taking a 6-0 loss in the second set. Davis forced a tiebreaker in the first set of the fifth singles match, but he was bested in the tiebreaker 7-5 and fell in the second set 6-2 to drop the match. In the final singles match, junior
Matt Kendrick (Birmingham, AL) took a 6-2, 6-3 loss.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, February 17, as they play their opening match of Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play on the road against Ferrum College. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m. in Ferrum.
