WINGATE, NC -- Seniors
Patrick Saunders (Alexandria) and
Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) each scored three goals and added two assists to help lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 15-7 win over Pfeiffer (NC) University, Tuesday night at Irwin Belk Stadium.
The Tigers opened the game on fire, scoring four goals over the first four minutes, starting 27 seconds into the game where Saunders rifled a shot into the back of the net. Senior
Michael Leone (Vienna) was next to find the back of the net, starting a run of three goals in 30 seconds, with junior
Gaines Weis (Richmond) striking next and Leone adding a second off a pass from sophomore
Luke Popow (Holly Springs, NC) 13 seconds after Weis. The Falcons struck back with two unanswered before H-SC closed out the quarter with O'Brien's first goal of the game off a pass from Saunders.
Pfeiffer opened up the scoring in the second quarter, scoring two unanswered over the first four and a half minutes. The Tigers responded with two of their own, starting with a goal from Saunders off an assist from O'Brien. O'Brien followed up his assist three minutes later with a goal on the man advantage to take a 7-4 lead. Pfeiffer responded with one goal to close the half a 7-5 in favor of H-SC.
The Tigers opened the third quarter just like they did the first, with Saunders scoring the opening goal of a four goal run. Sophomore
Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) scored his first of the game less than a minute later off a pass from Saunders. Junior
Campion White (Apex, NC) scored his first of the evening, firing home a shot off a feed from freshman
Cameron Van Lunen (Southern Shores, NC). The final goal of the run came from the stick of O'Brien as he finished off a pass from White to push the lead to 11-5. H-SC almost held Pfeiffer scoreless in the quarter as the Falcons broke through with 28 seconds remaining to bring the score to 11-6 after 45 minutes of action.
Senior
Ford Burke (Richmond) scored his first goal of the game just under a minute into the fourth quarter, as he got the feed from O'Brien and beat the goalie. White made it two straight for H-SC, rifling a shot past the goalie to push the lead to 13-6. After a goal by the Falcons, H-SC struck on the man advantage as Saunders beat the keeper less than a minute after the Falcons scored. Sophomore
Davis Mack (Henrico) scored the final goal for the Tigers, scoring off a pass from freshman
Alex Wagner (Cary, NC) to bring the game to 15-7.
Hanes and Leone each scored two goals, while White scored two goals while adding an assist. Weis, Burke, and Mack each scored a goal while Popow, Wagner, Van Lunen. Junior
Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) grabbed a game-high nine ground balls and caused four turnovers.
Senior
Peter Smith (Warrenton) got his second win in net, making 11 saves on 18 shots on goal.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, February 24, when the host Rhodes (TN) College in non-conference action. The game is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. at Lewis C. Everett Stadium.
