Hampden-Sydney Drops Season-Opening Doubleheader At Marymount 7-6, 9-5

TYSONS, Va. --
Junior team captain Christian Lancaster (Danville) had two hits in the first game, while classmate Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) had five hits in the second game, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped both games of its season-opening and non-conference baseball doubleheader on the road at Marymount University on Sunday afternoon at Capital One Park in Tysons. Sophomore Sterling Austin (Petersburg) took the pitching setback in the 7-6 opener, while freshman Adam Emhoff (Chesapeake) took the mound loss in the 9-5 nightcap for the visiting Tigers (0-2) against the host Saints (0-2). The games were played at the site of this year's (final four, double-elimination) Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Baseball Tournament scheduled for May 9-11 in northern Virginia.

In game one, H-SC scored six runs on seven hits with five errors … scoring one run in the third inning, two runs each in the fourth and sixth innings, and one run in the ninth. MU scored seven runs on five hits with no errors … scoring two runs in the first inning, one run in the third, along with two runs each in the fourth and fifth innings.

In the third, senior team captain Trent Jones (Virginia Beach) (1-2, RBI) drew a walk with one out and later scored when freshman Trey Shrock (Appomattox) (RBI) lined out to left field.

In the fourth, sophomore Jacob Miller-Bopp (Barhamsville) was hit by a pitch with one out and advanced to second on a single through the right side by Lancaster (2-4), before crossing the plate on an RBI ground ball by junior team captain Johnny Oates II (Chester) (2 RBIs). Lancaster would later score on an infield RBI single by junior Christian Chambers (Midlothian) (1-3, RBI).

In the sixth, Lancaster led off with a single to right field, advanced to third on a double to right field by senior Tillman Butler (Culpeper) (1-2), and scored on another RBI ground ball by Oates. Butler crossed the plate when Jones flied out to left field.

In the ninth, Jones doubled down the left field line with one out and scored on a two-out, RBI single to center field by Masterson (1-4, RBI).

Austin (0-1) pitched the first 4.0 innings for the Tigers, scattering three hits and five runs, three earned, with three strikeouts and three walks. Junior Justin Reynolds (Virginia Beach) tossed the final 4.0 innings, yielding two hits and two runs, unearned, with four strikeouts and no walks.

In game two, H-SC scored five runs on 12 hits with one error … scoring two runs in the fourth inning and one run each in the fifth, seventh and ninth innings. MU scored nine runs on nine hits with two errors … scoring three runs in the first inning, one run each in the second, third and sixth innings, and three runs in the seventh.

In the fourth, Miller-Bopp (1-4) reached on an infield single to open the frame, advanced to second when freshman Jase Howell (Portsmouth) (1-3) was hit-by-a-pitch, and later scored on an RBI single through the left side by senior Lucas Burnette (Hurt) (1-3, RBI). Howell would cross the plate when Chambers (RBI) flied out to center field.

In the fifth, Masterson (5-5) led off with a triple to center field and scored on an RBI single to right field by Lancaster (1-5, 2 RBIs). In the seventh, Shrock (1-4) opened with a single to left field and later crossed the plate when Lancaster reached on a fielder's choice. In the ninth, sophomore Turner Fitzpatrick (Richmond) reached on a fielder's choice while pinch-hitting to open the at-bat and later scored on an RBI single to center field by junior Grayson Harris (Moseley) (1-5, RBI).

Emhoff (0-1) pitched the first 4.0 innings for the Tigers, allowing five hits and five runs, four earned, with five strikeouts and two walks in his collegiate debut. Senior Ryan Portes (Midlothian), sophomore Jake Williams (Chesapeake), freshman Hank Blanton (Midlothian) and junior Gavin Gregory (Suffolk) each tossed an inning in relief … Portes (1K) and Gregory (1K, 1BB) each with a hitless and scoreless inning. Williams yielded one hit and one run, unearned, with two strikeouts, while Blanton allowed three hits and three runs, two earned, with two strikeouts and one walk.

H-SC will return home for its home opener against non-conference opponent North Carolina Wesleyan University on Wednesday, February 21, at 3 p.m. on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
