No. 23 Hampden-Sydney Welcomes No. 7 Randolph-Macon On Wednesday Night In Sold-Out Contest

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College, ranked No. 23 in the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25, welcomes archrival and No. 7 Randolph-Macon College for a designated non-conference basketball game on Wednesday night, November 13, at 7 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. It's the home opener for the host Tigers, who are 1-0 overall, while the visiting Yellow Jackets are 1-1 overall. The contest has already been announced as sold-out, and it's a "WHITEOUT WEDNESDAY" as all fans are encouraged to wear white. The game can be heard locally on WVHL Radio, Kickin' Country 92.9 FM, and will also be available worldwide on the Internet at wvhl.net or via the TuneIn Radio App, while available to watch as well on the Tiger Sports Network live video stream at hscathletics.com, pregame airing at 6:30 p.m.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the sixth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 115-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC), having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee University. Kimbrough is 84-38 at the College, ranking seventh in program coaching wins, while his current winning percentage (.689) ranks second all-time. He is the back-to-back National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III District 6 Coach of the Year (2022-23, 2023-24), and was the 2022-23 ODAC Men's Basketball Bob Johnson Coach of the Year.

Scouting No. 23 Hampden-Sydney
H-SC was led in its season-opening 81-64 road win at (RV)Swarthmore (PA) on Nov. 9 by junior transfer guard and team captain Colin Radcliffe (Richlands, NC) with his game-high and career-high 27 points, making a very efficient 10-12 field goals, including 5-7 three-pointers, and 2-3 free throws in 22 minutes. All-American fifth-year guard and team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) finished with 17 points, a game-high six assists and four rebounds for the Tigers. Junior forward and team captain Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) contributed 13 points and a game-high six rebounds. Freshman forward John Campbell (High Point, NC) had nine points, while junior transfer guard Hamilton Campbell (Wytheville) had five points and game-highs of six assists and two steals. H-SC shot 55% (34-62) from the field, including 35% (7-20) on three-pointers, and 55% (6-11) at the free throw line.

2024-25 Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are fifth-year Adam Brazil, along with juniors Shane Fernald and Colin Radcliffe. Brazil is serving in the leadership role for his third season, while Fernald and Radcliffe are each first-year captains. Adam is the son of Mark and Kristen Brazil and is majoring in English with minors in leadership in the public interest and rhetoric. Shane is the son of the late Jon Fernald and Cathy Smith and is majoring in English with a minor in rhetoric. Colin is the son of Ian and Sarah Radcliffe and is majoring in history.

2024-25 Coaching Staff
Coach Kimbrough is aided again this season by Bryson Gibson, promoted to associate head coach in May, while also in his sixth year with the program, third-year assistant coach Carson Long, along with first-year assistant coach Trevor Loscombe.

Scouting No. 7 Randolph-Macon
The Yellow Jackets are coached by 10th-year head coach Josh Merkel. RMC has been led through two games by junior guards Jabril Robinson with his 19.5 points (7 3FGs) and 6.5 assists, Keishawn Pulley Jr. with his 17.0 points (4 3FGs) and 6.5 rebounds, and Amr Areikat with his 12.0 points. The Yellow Jackets shoot 42% (50-120) from the field, including 28% (18-64) on three-pointers, and 72% (33-46) at the line; scoring 75.5 points, and yielding 73.5 points.

Series History (Since 1950)
H-SC and RMC are playing for the 168th time since 1950. The Yellow Jackets lead the series, 101-66, including 51-32 as members of the ODAC since 1989. RMC has won 13 of the last 14 games between the two schools, including a 48-46 road win in Fleet Gym last February 3. The Tigers had defeated the Yellow Jackets 61-52 last December 8, 2023 in Ashland—its first win there since Feb. 6, 2013 (66-47). H-SC's last win at home in Fleet Gym against RMC was on February 1, 2017 (63-56), as the Yellow Jackets have won six-straight in Fleet Gym.

ODAC Preseason Poll
H-SC was picked third in the 2024-25 ODAC Preseason Poll. The Tigers earned 123 points, including two first-place votes, among the 13 conference schools. RMC was picked first with 137 points and seven first-place votes, while Guilford was chosen second with 129 points and two first-place votes, as well. H-SC was followed closely by Virginia Wesleyan in fourth with 120 points and the other two first-place votes, along with Roanoke (97), Washington and Lee (78), Shenandoah (73), Ferrum (69), Bridgewater (67), Lynchburg (52), Randolph (29), Averett (26) and Eastern Mennonite (14).

Scheduling Toughness
H-SC is playing another difficult schedule this season, one that includes four schools ranked among the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25, including No. 3 John Carroll (OH), No. 5 Christopher Newport, No. 7 RMC and No. 17 Guilford. Swarthmore is receiving votes in the poll, while two opponents participating in the Hampden-Sydney Tip-Off Tournament Sponsored by Elder, Watkins, Friedman & Allen, P.C. are also in the preseason poll—No. 20 Maryville (TN) and Gettysburg (PA), who is receiving votes, as well. JCU, CNU, RMC, GC, Swarthmore, Eastern (PA) and Virginia Wesleyan each participated in the NCAA Tournament a year ago. Maryville won the Collegiate Conference of the South Championship, but did not play in NCAA Tournament.

Career Watch
Adam Brazil ranks 40th in program history with 1,075 career points in 94 career games. He adds 280 career rebounds, 295 career assists, 106 career steals, one career block and 191 career three-pointers.

The Team Three-Point Stat
H-SC has made at least one three-point field goal in 494 consecutive games, dating back to a home game vs. Emory & Henry on Dec. 3, 2005 (0-1 3FGA). Ironically, the Tigers won that high-scoring contest 130-99.

Program History
H-SC is competing in its 115th-year of basketball during 2024-25. The Tigers began this season with an overall program record of 1,517-1,096 since beginning in 1908, and currently total 1,518 wins. H-SC has posted 63 winning seasons, 17 seasons with at least 20 wins, six seasons with at least 25 wins, has won a record 11 ODAC Tournament Championships and has made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances.

NCAA Tournament History
H-SC has made 16 NCAA Tournament appearances since 1989, winning at least one game in 13 of the 16 years, while compiling an overall NCAA Tournament record of 25-17. The Tigers advanced to the Final Four in 1999, 2003 and 2024, and to the National Championship in 1999 and 2024. The Garnet & Grey were also National Runner-Up in 1999, falling to UW-Platteville 76-75 in double-overtime in the National Championship contest, and fell to Gustavus Adolphus (MN) 79-68 in the 2003 National Semifinals, before falling to Wooster (OH) 78-74 in the third-place game. H-SC also advanced to the Elite Eight in 1995, while reaching the Sweet 16 in 1992, 1994 and 1998. The Tigers have hosted 22 NCAA Tournament games since 1992, compiling an impressive record of 17-5.

Three Former Tigers Are Division I Head Coaches
H-SC currently has three former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 15th year at UC Irvine ... Ryan Odom '96 is in his second season at VCU and his ninth season as a DI head coach (UMBC, Utah State) ... Griff Aldrich '96 is in his seventh year at Longwood. Through Nov. 11, Turner was 292-180 at UCI (3-0 this season) ... Odom was 185-111 overall, including 26-14 at VCU (2-0 this season), 44-25 in two years at USU and 97-60 in five years at UMBC ... Aldrich was 111-86 at Longwood (2-0 this season).
