No. 1 Hampden-Sydney Welcomes Eastern Mennonite On Saturday At 2 p.m.

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College, ranked No. 1 in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25, welcomes Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent Eastern Mennonite University on Saturday afternoon, January 13, at 2 p.m. in S. Douglas Fleet Gymnasium at Kirby Field House. NCAA Division III's top-ranked Tigers are 13-1 overall, including 5-1 in the ODAC, following a 78-57 ODAC road win at Bridgewater College on Jan. 10~their eighth-straight victory. The Royals are 4-11 overall, 0-7 in the ODAC, after a 68-53 ODAC home loss to No. 20 Virginia Wesleyan University on Jan. 10~their third consecutive loss. It's free admission for all regular season home contests at Hampden-Sydney and the game will be available to watch on the Tiger Sports Network, pregame airing at 1:30 p.m.

Head Coach Caleb Kimbrough
H-SC is led by the fifth-year head coach who took over the program on April 4, 2019. The former head coach at Huntingdon (AL) College from 2016-19, Kimbrough is the 19th head coach in the 114-year history of the storied Hampden-Sydney program. He is no stranger to the ODAC, having played four years at Guilford (NC) College and coached six years with the Quakers, and one year at Washington and Lee University. Kimbrough is 65-36 overall at the College, including 36-22 in ODAC games. Caleb was both the 2022-23 National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division III District 6 Coach of the Year, and the ODAC Men's Basketball Bob Johnson Coach of the Year.

Scouting No. 1 Hampden-Sydney
H-SC is enjoying its finest start to a season since 2003-04 when the Tigers also began 13-1 en route to a 25-5 campaign that included an ODAC Tournament Championship and NCAA Tournament appearance. This year's team is extremely balanced offensively with three players averaging in double-figure scoring among its five starters that are each scoring at least 5.6 points per game, while seven Tigers are playing at least 15-plus minutes among 10 playing eight-plus minutes per game. H-SC has been led by senior forward Davidson Hubbard (Charlotte, NC) with his 15.4 points (24 3FGs) and 8.2 rebounds, senior guard and team captain Adam Brazil (Mooresville, NC) with his 12.6 points (29 3FGs) and 4.1 assists, along with fifth-year guard Ryan Clements (Conyers, GA) with his 11.9 points, 4.6 rebounds and 3.1 assists. Joining them in the lineup have been senior guard Alex Elliott (Marietta, GA) (7.4 points, 4.1 rebounds, 15 3FGs) and senior guard/forward and team captain Josiah Hardy (Ashburn) (5.6 points, 4.4 rebounds). Fifth-year guard Chase Turner (Virginia Beach) (4.4 points, 3.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists), fifth-year forward and team captain Miles Harris (Virginia Beach) (3.8 points, 3.7 rebounds, 13 3FGs), junior guard Ayman McGowan (Memphis, TN) (3.7 points, 12 3FGs) and sophomore forward Shane Fernald (Charlotte, NC) (3.1 points) have provided solid depth. The Tigers are shooting 45% (383-858) from the field, including 38% (117-310) on three-point field goals (8.4 per game), and 75% (141-188) at the free throw line. H-SC has averaged 73.1 points, and allowed only 59.6 points, for a +13.6 scoring margin.

Scouting Eastern Mennonite
The Royals are coached by sixth-year head coach Melvin Felix. EMU has been led by junior guard/forward Aviwe Mahlong with his 13.1 points (25 3FGs) and 4.9 rebounds, junior forward Nick Ondrus with his 9.2 points (18 3FGs) and 5.3 rebounds, along with sophomore forward Jazen Walker with his 9.1 points and 4.1 rebounds. The Royals shoot 40% (353-893) from the field, including 29% (116-399) on three-pointers (7.7 per game), and 62% (159-258) at the line; scoring 65.4 points, and yielding 76.9 points, for a -11.5 scoring margin.

ODAC Series History
H-SC and EMU are playing for the 86th time as ODAC opponents since the 1976-77 season. The Tigers lead the conference series at 61-24, including three-straight wins, the most recent being an 87-53 road win last December 3, 2022 in Harrisonburg. H-SC also won the last time the two teams played in Fleet Gym, 79-52, on Dec. 4, 2021.

H-SC  remains ranked No. 1 nationally in this week's D3hoops.com Top 25. It's the second consecutive week that the Tigers have been ranked first in the national poll for NCAA Division III men's basketball. The Garnet & Grey earned 614 points in this week's poll, including 20 of 25 first-place votes.

H-SC currently ranks seventh nationally in winning percentage (92.9), 10th in scoring defense (59.6), 20th in three-point percentage (37.7), 21st in field goal percentage defense (38.0), 26th in scoring margin (13.6), 28th in assist/turnover ratio (1.34) and 36th in free throw percentage (75.0). Adam Brazil ranks 30th in Division III assist/turnover ratio (2.59).

The Team Three-Point Stat
H-SC has made at least one three-point field goal in 474 consecutive games, dating back to a home game vs. Emory & Henry on Dec. 3, 2005 (0-1). Ironically, the Tigers won that contest 130-99. H-SC's 117 three-pointers this season includes two games of at least 11, with a season-high 17 three-pointers vs. Rose-Hulman (IN) on Nov. 18 (17-36). The season-low is four at Ferrum on Jan. 3 (4-22).

Career Watch
Ryan Clements ranks 18th in career scoring with 1,266 career points in 101 career games (12.5). Russell Turner '92 is the all-time leader with 2,272 career points. Clements is ninth in career steals with 169 career steals (1.7). Ralph Baker '89 is the all-time leader with 258 career steals. Davidson Hubbard is 10th in career blocks with 47 career blocks in 72 career games (0.7). Mike Thompson '04 is the all-time leader with 136 career blocks.

Strength of Schedule
H-SC has already played six schools ranked among the D3hoops.com Preseason Top 25 and/or the regular season D3hoops.com Top 25, including top-ranked Christopher Newport and John Carroll (OH), No. 11 Guilford (NC) and No. 25 Swarthmore (PA), along with Widener (PA) and Randolph-Macon—the latter two each receiving votes in the poll when playing. Defending National Champion CNU and Swarthmore each advanced to the 2023 NCAA Final Four. In addition, the ODAC has four schools ranked among the latest Top 25—No. 1 H-SC, No. 2 Guilford, No. 17 Randolph-Macon and No. 20 Virginia Wesleyan, while Shenandoah and Ferrum are receiving votes.

2023-24 Team Captains
Leading the Tigers are fifth-year Miles Harris, along with seniors Adam Brazil and Josiah Hardy. Harris and Brazil are each serving in the leadership role for their second season, while Hardy is a first-year captain. Miles is the son of Randy Harris and Corey Bacs and is majoring in economics and business. Adam is the son of Mark and Kristen Brazil and is majoring in English. Josiah is the son of Vernal Hardy and Felicia Miller and is majoring in economics and business.
 
Three Former Tigers Are Division I Head Coaches
H-SC currently has three former basketball team members and graduates of the College that are serving as NCAA Division I head coaches. Russell Turner '92 is in his 14th year at UC Irvine ... Ryan Odom '96 is in his first season at VCU and his eighth season as a DI head coach (UMBC, Utah State) ... Griff Aldrich '96 is in his sixth year at Longwood. Entering this season, Turner was 265-170 at UCI ... Odom was 141-85 overall, including 44-25 in two years at USU and 97-60 in five years at UMBC ... Aldrich was 88-72 at Longwood.

H-SC will play two ODAC games on the road next week, including at Randolph College on Wednesday, Jan. 17, at 5 p.m. in Lynchburg—another early start time ... and at Shenandoah University on Saturday, Jan. 20 at 2 p.m. in Winchester. The Tigers then return home for four-straight in the friendly confines of Fleet Gym, beginning with the University of Lynchburg on Wednesday, Jan. 24, at 7 p.m.
