HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore
Charlie Letson (Wilmington, NC) scored off a perfect free kick delivery by senior
Stefan Ngoh (Goldvein), but Hampden-Sydney College fell 4-1 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) play to the University of Lynchburg, Wednesday night at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
"When you give up the goals we gave up tonight, you aren't going to win very many games," said head coach
Tommy DiNuzzo. 'Right now, we have to make some adjustments as a group and learn from tonight and be ready for Saturday, which, we will. Going through these types of moments is important for us though and will define our team and our season ultimately."
It took under nine minutes of action for there to be a goal in the first half, as it was the Hornets who struck first. It took over 13 minutes before there was a second goal, and this one was the equalizing goal for the Tigers, as Ngoh sent in the free kick from the right side of the field and found a leaping Letson at the back post who headed it up and over a jumping goalkeeper and into the right side of the net. The game did not stay even for long as 45 seconds later the Hornets grabbed the lead back. Lynchburg was not finished in the first half, scoring again in the 29th minute to take a 3-1 lead, which it took into halftime.
After a high-scoring first half, goals were more difficult to come by in the second half, despite an increase in shot attempts between the two sides. The only goal in the second half was scored by the Hornets in the 70th minute to give them a 4-1 lead and eventual 4-1 win.
Shots were very even for both sides, with H-SC only being outshot by one by Lynchburg (13-12). It was the Hornets who had the advantage in shots in the first half (7-3), but the Tigers took nine shots to the Hornets six in the second half.
Junior
Connor Kitson (Wake Forest, NC) made his first start of the year, taking the loss while making three saves.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, September 23, when they play host to North Carolina Wesleyan University. Kick-off is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
