Hampden-Sydney Earns A Rain Soaked 1-1 Draw With Sewanee (TN)

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College used a late first half goal from senior Jackson Burkhart (Raleigh, NC) to grab a 1-1 draw with the University of the South, Sunday afternoon at Hellmuth-Gibson Field.

"Good response today after making the game very difficult for ourselves and allowing an early goal," said head coach Tommy DiNuzzo. "Sewanee is a quality team and our guys had to battle back and a tie was probably a fair result on the day."

Sewanee jumped out to an early lead as they scored less than two minutes in off a glancing header from a cross into the box. H-SC worked its way into the game and in the 41st minute it got the answer, as Burkhart chipped the goalkeeper and found the top right corner off a pass from senior Emory Davis (Palmyra).

The second half saw a battle between both sides as the rain began to fall and fall hard. Both sides had chances but neither side was able to finish and both goalkeepers were up to the task as each side failed to beat the goalies in the second half.

Junior Wills Huddleston (Baldwin, MD) stayed unbeaten for H-SC, now boasting a 3-0-2 record in net as he made three saves.

Sewanee had the edge in shots (9-5), and shots on target (4-2). Both sides were equal on corner kicks at five apiece.

The Tigers will be back in action on Friday, September 15 when they play in the Simms/Flowers Classic against the University of Mary Washington. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. at the City Stadium in Richmond.
