Defense Leads The Way As No. 19 Hampden-Sydney Beats Bridgewater 15-5

BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Junior Thomas Harry (Troy) led the charge on defense with six caused turnovers, as No. 19 Hampden-Sydney College caused a program record 27 turnovers in a 15-5 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) victory over Bridgewater College, Wednesday night at the Jopson Athletic Complex in Bridgewater. Junior Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) led the way on offense with a game-high three goals to go along with one assist, while fellow classmate Michael Leone (Vienna) tallied a game-high three assists to go along with one goal. Senior Talmadge Hope (Richmond) scored two goals and had one assist, and seniors Nick Morgan (Issaquah, WA) and Jack Fechter (Potomac, MD) both scored goals out of the defense. Fifth-year goalie Will Perry (Roanoke) got the win, making four saves.

Sophomore Campion White (Apex, NC) got the scoring started in the first quarter, as he made a quick move to the right from up top and kept the defender on his hip until he fired the ball in the back of the net. O'Brien made it two straight goals for H-SC, as he made a spin move to get some space from the defender and fired it home. After the Eagles climbed one back, H-SC forced a turnover and broke in transition, eventually finding O'Brien on the right side who made a quick pass to sophomore Gaines Weis (Richmond) in the middle of the field for the easy goal and close out a 3-1 start to the game after 15 minutes.

The Tigers found the net quickly to start the second quarter, as Morgan picked up the loose ball in the defensive half off a caused turnover, bringing it up the field before finding a Leone, who gave it right back for the finish. Saunders made it three unanswered goals for H-SC, as he received the ball up top after subbing on and took his man one-on-one before beating the goalie with a left-handed finish. With the Tigers pressing the Eagles on a clear attempt, Hope causes the goalie to turn the ball over away from the net, and he picks up the loose ball before easily finishing in the wide-open net. O'Brien got his second of the game as he attacked his defender on the right side, before making a quick spin to his left and firing the ball inside the far post for the goal. After losing the face-off, freshman Connor Erlenbach (Midlothian) did not give up on the play as he caused the turnover, where Fechter picks up the loose ball and starts the break, making a pass to Leone who then gives it back to him for the fifth-goal in 3:15 to start the second quarter. O'Brien scored his hat trick to make it seven unanswered, as in transition he gets the feed on the right side from Weis and finds the back of the net at the far post. Bridgewater answered 22 seconds later on the man-up advantage to cut the H-SC lead to 9-2 at the half.

H-SC opened the scoring in the third quarter at the 11:54 mark, as freshman Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) caused a turnover and picked up the ground ball to start the break, in which he fed Hope on the left side, who made a quick pass to Leone for the fast break goal. Freshman Patrick Hanes (Raleigh, NC) went at his defender and powered through him to get some separation and beat him in a foot race to the goal for his first of the night. Senior Nick Thompson (Midlothian) made it three unanswered to start the third quarter, as he spun left and then right, before spinning left again and unleashing an underhand shot past the goalie. After a goal by Bridgewater, a turnover in the defensive end is pushed in transition, and Harry finds junior Drew Duffy (Virginia Beach) wide open in the middle of the field for the goal. Bridgewater answered back off the face-off scoring four seconds later to bring the game to 13-4 in favor of H-SC after 45 minutes.

Hope opened the fourth quarter with a goal, as the Tigers moved the ball in transition the ball found the stick of Leone in the middle of the field, who passed it over to Hope for the finish. Fifth-year Marshall Flagg (Williamsburg) had the ball on the right side of the field and drew an extra defender to him, and made a pinpoint pass to the far post to find freshman Davis Mack (Henrico) wide-open in front of the crease for the easy finish. The Eagles clawed one back with 3:23 remaining, but it would cap off the scoring as H-SC took the victory 15-5.

The Tigers are back in action on Saturday, April 8 when they take on Virginia Wesleyan University in another ODAC clash. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. at Birdsong Field in Virginia Beach.
