HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior Ethan Currin (Toano) hit two home runs with four RBIs on the day, while sophomore Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) had four hits and three RBIs, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a sweep of an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball home doubleheader past Averett University on Sunday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Senior Tymothy Hart (Powhatan) gained the pitching victory in the 5-4 walk-off win in the opener, while classmate Justin Woodall (Mechanicsville) earned the mound triumph in the 13-2 win in the nightcap for the host Tigers (19-15, 12-7) against the visiting Cougars (5-28-1, 2-17) on Senior Day.

With two-game sweep, 20th-year Hampden-Sydney head coach Jeff Kinne reached a significant coaching milestone, now totaling 400 career collegiate coaching wins. Coach Kinne is 400-349-6 overall, including 205-161-1 in ODAC games during his 20 years with the Tigers.

In game one, H-SC scored five runs on eight hits with no errors … scoring one run in the fourth inning, three runs in the fifth and one run in the decisive ninth. AU scored four runs on 16 hits with two errors … scoring one run each in the fifth and eighth innings and two runs in the ninth.

In the fourth, Currin (1-3, RBI) slammed a solo blast over the fence in center field—to the left of the 405 sign—for the early 1-0 advantage.

In the fifth, sophomore Grayson Harris (Moseley) (1-2) walked to begin the at-bat, stole second base and scored when Masterson (2-5) reached on a throwing error—Masterson advancing to second on the play, before stealing third ahead of a walk to senior captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) (1-2, RBI). Following a pitching change, Boyce stole second base, before sophomore Christian Chambers (Midlothian) (RBI) provided a sacrifice fly RBI to right field that plated Masterson with Boyce moving to third. Boyce then crossed the plate courtesy of a balk to make it a 4-1 contest.

In the ninth, Harris led off with a single to center field and advanced to third base when Masterson followed with a double to right field. Boyce promptly brought Harris across the plate with the winning win on his sacrifice fly RBI to left field to provide for the thrilling final margin.

Senior Owen Tappy (Charlotte, NC) started for the Tigers and pitched the first 8.0 innings, scattering 14 hits and four runs, all earned, with five strikeouts and no walks. Hart (1-0) gained his first mound win of the season with the final three outs, allowing no runs on two hits with one strikeout and no walks.

In game two, H-SC scored 13 runs on 12 hits with one error … scoring four runs in the second inning, one run each in the fourth and fifth innings, six runs in the sixth and one run in seventh. AU scored two runs on six hits with two errors … scoring the two runs in the seventh inning.

In the second, senior captain Jay Beavers (Alexandria) (1-3) reached on a one-out walk, advanced to second base on a single to right field by junior Trent Jones (Virginia Beach) (1-2), and moved to third when Harris (2-4, RBI) reached on an infield single off the glove of the first baseman to load the bases. Masterson (2-3, 3 RBIs) drove in all three runners with a three-run triple into the left field corner, and he then crossed the plate when Boyce (RBI) followed with an RBI ground ball for an early 4-0 advantage.

In the fourth, Jones reached on a throwing error and advanced to second base on the play, moving to third on a single to center field by Harris. Harris then stole second ahead of a one-out walk to Boyce that loaded the bases. Freshman Mason Jablonski (Franklin, TN) (1-2, 2 RBIs), pinch-running for Jones, crossed the plate when Chambers (1-2, RBI) was hit by a pitch to make it a 5-0 contest.

In the fifth, Currin (2-5, 3 RBIs) singled to left field to begin the at-bat, advanced to second base on a single to left center field by Beavers, and moved to third via a fielder's choice off the bat of Jablonski. Currin then scored courtesy of an RBI sacrifice fly to left field by Harris to make it a 6-0 lead for the Garnet & Grey.

In the sixth, Masterson led off with a walk, stole second base and crossed the plate when freshman Jacob Miller-Bopp (Barhamsville) (1-4, RBI) reached on an infield single to shortstop that included a throwing error on the play. Currin then provided a two-out, three-run home run to left field—a towering blast for his second of the day and his team-leading sixth homer on the season—also scoring Chambers (who had walked) and Miller-Bopp. Following a walk to Beavers, as well, Jablonski slammed his first collegiate home run, a two-run shot to left field to increase the lead to 12-0.

In the seventh, junior Cameron Shields (Scottsville) drew a lead-off walk as a pinch-hitter and later scored courtesy of a fielder's choice RBI off the bat of junior Lucas Burnette (Hurt) (RBI) to provide for the final margin.

Woodall (3-2) started for the Tigers and pitched the first 7.0 solid innings, scattering five hits and two runs, unearned, with six strikeouts and no walks. Senior Davis Ferguson (Rocky Mount) tossed a scoreless eighth inning, yielding one hit with one strikeout and no walks. Classmate Russell Bowles (Moseley) pitched a scoreless ninth inning, allowing no hits with two strikeouts and no walks.

It was Senior Day as the program's eight seniors were recognized between games during a special ceremony. All eight of our fourth-year team members played and contributed to the sweep of the doubleheader, including Jay Beavers, Ryan Boyce, Russell Bowles, Ethan Currin, Davis Ferguson, Tymothy Hart, Owen Tappy and Justin Woodall. These young men have led the program to a four-year overall record of 69-52, including 36-27 in ODAC action. We thank them and wish them only the best moving forward in their respective lives!

H-SC will remain at home to welcome ODAC opponent and nationally-ranked No. 7 the University of Lynchburg on Tuesday, April 25, at 3:30 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium in the final regular season home game for the Tigers.
