HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College took a victory in both singles and doubles action in the 7-2 defeat to Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent, the University of Lynchburg, Thursday afternoon at the H-SC Tennis Courts.
Sophomore
Barrett Foster (Virginia Beach) and freshman
Casey Coffey (Midlothian) opened up the match and doubles action with an 8-4 defeat. In the second doubles match freshman
Dillon McReynolds (Abingdon) and his partner
Tanner Allison (Midlothian), who was battling through a stomach bug, battled in their match having the lead before trailing and coming all the way back to win 8-7. In the third match, sophomore
Henry Singleton (Richmond) and his partner
Freshman John Glassner (Charlotte, NC) took the match to tiebreakers before falling 8-7.
Coffey was the first to finish in singles action with a 6-1, 6-3 defeat, followed by Glassner with a 7-6, 6-1 defeat. Foster battled against a very tough opponent in the top singles action, falling in two sets 6-4, 6-4. The drama in the singles matches came from singles two, four, and six with all three going to three sets. Singleton cruised to an early set victory, 6-0, before his opponent battled back to take set two 6-2. In set three Singleton pulled away late, taking two of the last three points for the victory. McReynolds grabbed an early victory in his match, taking the first set 7-5 before dropping set two 6-3. In the third set, his opponent jumped out to an early 6-0 lead in points before clawing back to 6-3, and then 9-4 before his late three-point run was stopped to fall 10-7 in the final frame and fall 7-5, 3-6, 7-10. Conde was the last to finish, after taking his first set 6-3 his opponent grabbed the second 6-4. In the final set, Conde jumped out to an early lead at 4-2 before his opponent scored four unanswered points to take the set 6-4 and match 6-3, 4-6, 4-6.
The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, April 15 when they travel to Roanoke College for an ODAC matchup with the Maroons. The match is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. at the Elizabeth Campus Complex in Salem.
