Match Recap: Men's Tennis |

Hampden-Sydney Defeated By Washington and Lee 8-1 In ODAC Action

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Sophomore Barrett Foster (Virginia Beach) picked up the only point for Hampden-Sydney College with a thrilling singles victory, in the 8-1 defeat against Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) member Washington and Lee University, Friday afternoon at the H-SC Tennis Courts.

The Tigers went down in all three of their doubles matches, starting with an 8-0 defeat for the duo of sophomore Henry Singleton (Richmond) and freshman Dillon McReynolds (Abingdon). Sophomores Taylor Fox (Virginia Beach) and Matt Kendrick (Birmingham, AL) fell 8-3, right before Foster and his partner freshman Casey Coffey (Midlothian) were defeated 8-1.

Singleton finished his singles match first, falling 6-1, 6-0, ahead of McReynolds who dropped the match 6-3, 6-1. Freshman John Glassner (Charlotte, NC) fell in the sixth singles match by a score line of 6-2, 7-6. Fox jumped out to an early lead in his singles match, taking the first set 6-3, before his opponent battled back taking the second set 6-2 and the final set 6-1. Coffey fell down early in his singles match, dropping the first set 6-4 before coming back in the second set to win 6-4. The final set did not go his way as he lost 10-1 in the final set to drop the match. Foster's match was the final one to finish, has he fell down early after losing the tiebreaker in the first set to go down 7-6. Foster then battled down a point to force a tiebreaker in the second set, which he went on to win to force an all important third set. In the third set, Foster jumped out to a 7-2 lead before his opponent countered getting the match down to 8-6. That would be as close as it got, as Foster won the next two points, grabbing the match with a powerful overhand spike at the net.

The Tigers will be back in action on Saturday, April 1 when they travel to Franklin & Marshall (PA) College in a non-conference match. The match is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.
