HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, VA -- Hampden-Sydney College fifth-year head tennis coach
Byron Balkin has announced his program's upcoming
2023 schedule that includes nine Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) matches among 20 regular season matches, including a trip to Orlando, Florida during spring break, and three matches over two days at Centre College in Kentucky. The Tigers open the season with a non-conference trip to Pfeiffer University on Saturday, February 11, at 12 p.m. in North Carolina.
"I am ecstatic about our upcoming spring tennis season and will be working hard with our guys to develop, prepare and put together quality practices and matches" said Balkin "I am anticipating many wonderful challenges ahead for our team and will be ready to meet them head on with persistence and gratitude. What I like about our schedule this year are the trips we are taking to places we haven't been to before, such as to Kentucky and Pennsylvania. Before our conference season begins in March, we are also taking the team on a trip to Orlando, where we will play many teams including a nighttime showdown with Wabash (IN) College for the Gentleman's Cup under the lights at the USTA National Campus. These experiences will widen our perspective on college tennis and will allow us to bond together on the road at important times of our season. It will be an honor to represent H-SC and Roll Tigers!"
Following the season opener, H-SC will stay on the road when they travel to Christopher Newport on Friday, Feb. 17, before a two day trip to Centre to face off with Asbury (KY) University on Friday, Feb. 24, then Centre and Hanover (IN) College on Feb. 25.
To start March, the Tigers take their spring break trip to Orlando where they start with two matches on March 5, against Carnegie Mellon (PA) University and Otterbein (OH) University. H-SC then matches up with Schreiner (TX) University on March 7, followed by Piedmont (GA) University on March, 8. A matchup with Wabash on March 9, closes out the spring break trip.
Upon the Tigers return from Florida, they open up ODAC play with the home opener against Randolph-Macon College on March 16. H-SC closes out the month of March with a trip to Averett University on March 18, and a home match with Washington and Lee University on March 24.
A road trip to Franklin and Marshall (PA) College opens the month of April and brings upon an end the non-conference schedule, before coming back down to play Bridgewater College on April 2. Following the two match road trip, H-SC plays its next two matches at home, first against Guilford (NC) College on April 8, followed by the University of Lynchburg on April 13.
H-SC closes out the season with a trip to Roanoke College on April 15, before playing its final home match on April 16, against Ferrum College. The season finale is six days later at Randolph College on April 22.
The ODAC Tournament will start on Wednesday, April 26 with the quarterfinals. The ODAC Semifinals will be played on April 29, while the Championship will be on April 30.
The Tigers completed their 2022 season with a 10-9 overall record, and a 6-2 record in the ODAC to earn the No. 3 seed in the ODAC tournament. H-SC reached the semifinals after defeating the No. 6 seed Randolph-Macon in the quarterfinals, 5-0, before falling to No. 2 seed Virginia Wesleyan, 5-1.
The program returns eight lettermen for the 2023 spring season, and adds four freshmen to a talented roster.
