H-SC dropped a
31-27 non-conference decision to Widener (PA) last weekend in its home opener. Following a 14-14 tie at halftime, the host Tigers took a 27-17 lead early in the fourth quarter, before the visiting Pride rallied with two late touchdowns—including the game-winner on a 16-yard scoring pass with just 37-seconds remaining—for their road win. GC dropped a 31-14 decision at Gallaudet (DC) last weekend. The visiting Pride fell behind 10-0 at halftime, and trailed 17-7 after three quarters, en route to their road setback.

This is the first-ever meeting between the two schools in football.
Scouting The Tigers
H-SC has been led offensively through two games by fifth-year quarterback and second-year team captain
Tanner Bernard (Lynchburg). Bernard has passed for 674 yards (48-81-1) and seven touchdowns, adding two touchdowns on the ground, as well.
The running game features the junior tandem of
Melik Frost (Hardeeville, SC) and
Josh Jones (South Hill). Frost has rushed for 160 yards on 35 attempts (4.6) and two touchdowns, adding 57 yards receiving on five catches. Jones adds 81 yards on 17 carries (4.8) with 45 yards receiving on five catches.
Senior tight end
David Byler (Virginia Beach) has led the receiving unit through two games with 155 yards receiving on 12 receptions and four touchdowns. Sophomore wide receiver
Austin Fernandez (Warrenton) has 163 yards receiving on eight catches and one touchdown, while junior wide receiver
Jamahdia Whitby (Williamsburg) adds 64 yards receiving on six receptions and one touchdown, and has averaged 16.5 yards on six kick returns, including a long of 20 yards.

James-Ryan Salvi (Troutville) leads the Tigers on defense with 27 total tackles, including 15 solo and 12 assists. Junior linebacker
Dorian Green (Martinsville) has 15 total tackles (6-9), including half a tackle for loss and two quarterback hurries. Junior safety
Will Pickren (Mount Pleasant, SC) adds 13 total tackles (2-11), including one tackle for loss and one pass breakup, while sophomore defensive end
Jordan Akerson (Roanoke) has 2.5 tackles for loss among his 10 total tackles (2-8) and two quarterback hurries.

Jack Breedlove (Atlanta, GA) is 9-10 on PATs. Sophomore left-footed punter
George Langhammer (Roanoke) has averaged 38.9 yards on seven punts, including a long of 55 yards, and one downed inside the 20. Junior wide receiver
Brice Wilson (Charlottesville) has averaged 21.3 yards on three kick returns, including a long of 26 yards.
Scouting Greensboro
GC is expected to be led offensively by fifth-year quarterback David Loughry II, junior wide receiver KJ Greer and sophomore wide receiver Coy Davis.
Loughry has passed for 704 yards (45-85-6), fifth in Division III, and six touchdowns to six different receivers. Greer has 112 yards receiving on six receptions and one touchdown, and Davis has 93 yards receiving on five receptions and one touchdown.
Sophomore linebacker Max Steele has led the Pride on defense with 28 total tackles (12-16), including 4.5 tackles for loss and 1.5 sacks. He's tied for first in DIII total tackles.
Freshman placekicker Marano Collins is 6-7 on PATs, and 1-2 on field goals (27 yards). Freshman punter Adam Louya has averaged 36.3 yards on six punts, including a long of 52 yards, with none downed inside the 20.

Tanner Bernard leads the ODAC in passing yards (674), passing yards per game (337.0), touchdowns (7), completions (48) and attempts (81), is second in passing efficiency (155.2) and third in completion percentage (59.3). He ranks among the Top 11 nationally in passing yards (seventh), passing yards per game (ninth), passing TDs (T-9th), completions per game (T-9th, 24.0), points responsible for (T-9th, 27.0) and total offense (11th, 344.5).
David Byler leads the ODAC in receiving touchdowns (4), is second in receptions (12), and fourth in receiving yards (155) and receiving yards per game (77.5). He ranks among the Top Five nationally in receiving TDs (T-4th) and total TDs (T-11th, 4).
Melik Frost leads the ODAC in rushing attempts (35), is second in rushing yards (160) and rushing yards per game (80.0), tied for second in touchdowns (2) and third in all-purpose yards (217).
James-Ryan Salvi leads the ODAC in total tackles (27) and tackles per game (13.5). He ranks among the Top 20 nationally in total tackles (T-3rd) and solo tackles (T-18th, 15).
Austin Fernandez is third in the ODAC in receiving yards (163), receiving yards per game (81.5) and yards per reception (20.4), and tied for fourth in receptions (8).
Dorian Green is third in the ODAC in total tackles (15) and tied for fifth in tackles per game (7.5).
Brice Wilson is fourth in the ODAC in kick return average (21.3).
Jack Breedlove is fourth in the ODAC in kick-scoring (9) and fifth in PAT percentage (9-10).
300-Yard Passing Games
Tanner Bernard has opened the season with two consecutive 300-yard passing games ... and has now passed for over 300 yards six times in his H-SC career. He passed for 346 yards and four-touchdowns at Wabash (9/3/22), and added 328 yards and three touchdowns against Widener (9/10/22). Bernard had a career-best 393 yards passing against Washington and Lee (10/2/21), completing 22-34 passes with two touchdowns and no interceptions. Bernard passed for 316 yards and one touchdown at Widener (PA) (9/11/21), and for 327 yards and two touchdowns at Guilford (NC) (9/25/21). He passed for 309 yards and three touchdowns at Guilford (3/19/21), as well.
100-Yard Rushing Games
Melik Frost rushed for over 100 yards for the first time in his H-SC career with his season-opening 101-yard, two-touchdown effort at Wabash (9/3/22). He surpassed the century mark on only 17 carries (5.9).
Run at the Record Book
Twenty-third year head coach
Marty Favret is the second-winningest football coach in school history with 140 victories (140-83), including 15 winning campaigns, while a five-time ODAC Coach of the Year. His program is 90-48 in ODAC games, while earning five ODAC Championships and making six Division III Football Championship appearances. Coach Favret's 140 wins are second only to the legendary Hall of Fame head coach J. Stokeley Fulton (143), who is the winningest and longest-tenured of all ... Coach Fulton led H-SC for 25 seasons (1960-84) and compiled an overall record of 143-99-5 with nine conference championships and three post-season appearances.
Hall of Fame Weekend
H-SC is inducting five new members into its
Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday morning, Sept. 17, at 11 a.m. in Snyder Hall at the Kirk Athletic Center.
Football All-American
Trevor Ikwild '11 from the Class of 2021, who was unable to attend last fall's induction, is joined from the 35th Class (of 2022) that includes five-time ODAC Men's Tennis singles and double champion
Scott Goodman '82, two-time Men's Lacrosse All-American
Doug Palmer '99 and Football All-American
Ben Rogers '12. In addition,
Cannon Watson, the Voice of the Tigers for 28 years, will receive a special citation.
The five outstanding gentlemen will be recognized on the field at halftime on Saturday afternoon, as well.

H-SC is idle next weekend with its bye week, as the Tigers will return to action on the road at ODAC opponent Bridgewater College on Saturday, October 1, at 2 p.m. in Bridgewater.
