Tigers Win OT Thriller Over #1 Seed Washington & Lee To Advance To ODAC Championship

LEXINGTON, Va. – Senior Sean Duffy (Ambler, PA), found Senior Bobby Clagett (Brandywine, MD), for the sudden death, overtime goal to send Hampden-Sydney to their first ODAC Championship game since 2017, Saturday afternoon.  The two seniors combined for six goals in the upset, while Senior Will Perry (Roanoke, VA) and the defense held Washington & Lee to under ten goals for only the sixth time this season.

The Generals would get on the board first, with a shot into the upper right corner, however for the next few minutes Perry came up with some big saves to keep it a one goal game, while the defense was able to limit the Washington & Lee scoring opportunities.  However, after a Tigers' turnover, the Generals worked the ball around and found the back of the net, to increase their advantage to two goals.  Hampden-Sydney would have scoring chances but could not convert and the quarter came to a close with them trailing by a score of 2-0.

The Tigers had some open looks at the goal, but it was Washington & Lee, again, who would strike first, pushing the lead, early in the second quarter, to 3-0.  However, on the next possession, Sophomore Michael Leone (Vienna, VA) found Duffy who fired a long shot past the goalie, to cut the lead to two, 3-1.  The Generals would answer, but with 2:51 remaining in the half, Clagett scored Hampden-Sydney's second goal of the game and that is how the quarter would end.

The third quarter was a big momentum switch for the Tigers, as Perry and his defense shut out the Washington & Lee offense, not allowing anything to get in the net.  That gave their two top scorers an opportunity to get their team back in the game.  Leone picked up his second assist of the game when he found Clagett for a goal, to pull within 4-3, and with 0:42 seconds left in the quarter Duffy tied the game at 4-4.

The Generals bounced back to start the fourth and final quarter, regaining the lead, but Duffy wasted no time scoring his third goal of the game, to once again tie things up.  After a missed shot, Sophomore Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) took the ball behind the net and fed a pass to Senior Presley Miller (Annapolis, MD), who scored his first goal of the season, giving Hampden-Sydney their first lead of the game, 6-5.  Unfortunately, a penalty would give Washington & Lee a man-up opportunity and they took full advantage, pulling even, 6-6, eventually taking the lead, with 3:38 to play, after a ball trickled in the goal.  With time running out, and the season in jeopardy, O'Brien fired one past the goalie, tying the game and sending it into overtime.

The two teams traded possessions in overtime, but with a little over two minutes remaining, the Tigers patiently worked the ball around, which allowed Duffy to feed a pass to Clagett, who fired a sidearm shot, scoring the goal, to secure the berth in the ODAC Championship.

Hampden-Sydney was led by Duffy and Clagett, who each scored three goals.  Duffy also dished out three assists, while Perry finished the game with 18 saves and a 72% save percentage. In addition, Freshman Conor Kilfeather was 10-19 on face-offs and the team, as a whole, caused a total of eight turnovers.  The Tigers will be back in action tomorrow afternoon in the ODAC Championship game and will await the winner of the Roanoke/Lynchburg game. They will look for their first title since 2017 and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament  Face-off is scheduled for 2 P.M. in Lexington, VA.
