Hampden-Sydney Drops Doubleheader To Shenandoah 11-5, 3-2 (13)

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior captain Max Lipscomb (Virginia Beach) had three hits and two RBIs in the second game, while freshman Christian Chambers (Midlothian) had two hits and two RBIs in the first game, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader to Shenandoah University on Saturday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Senior Nic Graziano (Virginia Beach) took the pitching loss in the 11-5 opener, while junior Owen Tappy (Charlotte, NC) took the mound setback in the 3-2, 13-inning nightcap for the host Tigers (20-17, 10-10) against the visiting Hornets (29-10-1, 14-5-1) on Senior Day.

In the first game, H-SC scored five runs on six hits with one error … scoring one run in the second inning and two runs each in the seventh and eighth. SU, receiving votes in this week's Collegiate Baseball/ABCA Division III Poll, scored 11 runs on 14 hits with one error … scoring three runs in the first inning, two runs in the third, three runs in the fifth and three runs in the ninth.

In the second, Chambers (2-3, 2 RBIs) delivered an RBI double to right center field that scored senior captain Trey Karnes (Mechanicsville) (1-3, RBI), who had been hit by a pitch.

In the seventh, Karnes had an RBI double to left center field that plated sophomore Lucas Burnette (Hurt), who had walked, and Karnes crossed the plate when Chambers doubled down the right field line.

In the eighth, freshman Jaxon Masterson (Raleigh, NC) (1-3, RBI) provided an RBI triple to left center field that scored Lipscomb (1-3), who had singled, and Masterson scored via a sacrifice fly RBI to right field by senior Ethan Badin (Richmond) (1-3, RBI).

Graziano (2-3) started and pitched the first 4.1 innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs, five earned, with one strikeout and two walks. Freshman Lance Tate (Stanardsville) pitched 3.2 innings, scattering three hits and two runs, both earned, with two strikeouts and no walks. Senior Matt Flatford (North Chesterfield) tossed two-thirds of an inning, yielding one hit and one run, earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Senior Jason Covaney (Williamsburg) tossed one-third of an inning, allowing one hit and no runs with no strikeouts and no walks.

In the second game that took three hours and 40 minutes to complete, H-SC scored two runs on eight hits with three errors … scoring two runs in the ninth inning. SU scored three runs on six hits with no errors … scoring one run each in the sixth, eighth and 13th innings.

In the ninth, Lipscomb (3-5, 2 RBIs) provided the dramatic and clutch two-out single to right field that scored junior captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) (1-5) and sophomore pinch-runner Trent Jones (Virginia Beach) to tie the contest at 2-2 and force the extra innings. Boyce had reached on an infield single to begin the at-bat, while Jones—who had a stolen base, as well—was running for senior Mark Evans (Yorktown) (2-4), who had singled with two outs to keep the inning alive.

Junior Justin Woodall (Mechanicsville) started and pitched the first 7.2 outstanding innings, scattering four hits and two runs, one earned, with five strikeouts and four walks. Seniors Trenton Tiller (Powhatan) and Kieran Conway (Chesapeake) each tossed one-third of an inning, yielding no hits and no runs with no strikeouts and no walks, respectively. Tappy (5-5) pitched the final 4.2 innings, allowing just two hits and one run, earned, with three strikeouts and two walks.

H-SC will play again next weekend, May 7-8, in the ODAC Tournament Quarterfinals … pairings and game times to be announced by the conference office.
