ASHLAND, Va. – Freshman
Barrett Foster (Virginia Beach, VA) and Senior
Tyler Brice (Rocky Mount, NC) bounced back from their doubles loss to win the No. 1 and No. 2 singles, pacing Hampden-Sydney to a 7-2 win over arch-rival Randolph-Macon, in their final regular season match. The win over the Yellow Jackets guarantees the Tigers will be at home for the first round of ODAC conference tournament.
Randolph-Macon took the early advantage wining two out of the three doubles matches. Foster and Brice fought hard in the No. 1 match, but would fall by a score of 8-7, while Freshmen
Frank Borden (Durham, NC) and
Matt Kendrick (Birmingham, AL) dropped No. 2, 8-3. However, in the No. 3 singles match, the Freshmen duo of
Matt Kendrick (Birmingham, AL) and
Henry Singleton (Richmond, VA) won the match, 8-2 to give their Tigers their first point of the day.
The last win in doubles sparked a run for Hampden-Sydney, as Foster won a hard fought No. 1 singles 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7), which was followed by a big win from his doubles partner Brice, 6-0, 6-4. Freshman
Taylor Fox (Virginia Beach, VA) took care of his opponent in No. 3 singles, 6-3, 6-3, while Singleton also won in straight sets 6-4, 6-2 in the No. 4 match. To round out the day, the Kendrick twins each were victorious in straight sets, with Matt winning 6-2, 6-1 and John securing the victory 6-2, 6-1.
The Tigers will be back in action Tuesday, at home, as the No. 3 seed in the ODAC tournament. They will await to find out who their opponent will be but in the meantime, will enjoy the win over Randolph-Macon and look to carry their three game win streak into the conference tournament.
