HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – After less than a week since the Hampden-Sydney tennis team defeated Randolph-Macon on the road, they earned #3 seed and the right to host an ODAC quarterfinal match with Yellow Jackets on Tuesday morning. Behind the play of Senior
Tyler Brice (Rocky Mount, NC), the Tigers defeated Randolph-Macon for a second straight time in five days, 5-0, to advance to the semifinals of the ODAC tournament.
After dropping two of the three doubles matches the last time the two teams met on Friday, Hampden-Sydney came out swinging, sweeping the matches for an early 3-0 lead. No. 2's Freshmen
Matt Kendrick (Birmingham, AL) and
Taylor Fox (Virginia Beach, VA), along with No. 3's Freshmen
John Kendrick (Birmingham, AL) and
Henry Singleton (Richmond, VA) won their respective matches by identical 8scores, 8-1. In the third match, and after going up 5-0 in No.1's, Freshman
Barrett Foster (Virginia Beach, VA) and
Tyler Brice fought off a Yellow Jackets rally to complete the doubles sweep, 8-6.
With the 3-0 advantage, the Tigers would only need to win two of the six singles matches to advance to the next round, and they wasted no time earning those two points. In No. 6 singles,
John Kendrick quickly took care of his opponent, winning in straight sets, 6-1, 6-1 and a few minutes later, as he has done all season,
Tyler Brice come through in the clutch, securing the winning point in his No. 2 match, 6-0-6-2. Since this is a tournament setting, the remaining ongoing matches would all end in a non-result status. However, at the time,
Barrett Foster,
Matt Kendrick,
Taylor Fox and
Henry Singleton were all leading their opponents.
Not only does the victory give the Tigers their 10
th win of the season, but it moves them one step closer to a possible ODAC Championship. However, they will first have to await the winner of #7 seed Roanoke College and #2 seed Virginia Wesleyan University to see who they will play in the semifinals on Saturday in Lexington, VA. Hampden-Sydney defeated the Maroons earlier this season but fell to the Marlins on the road. Stay tuned to
