HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – After being on the road for their last five matches, the Hampden-Sydney Tennis team was finally back at home, as they faced Bridgewater in a critical ODAC match. The Eagles came in tied for second place at 4-1, while the Tigers were only a game behind sitting at 3-2. Hampden-Sydney knew the importance of the match and it showed, as they had one of their most dominate performances of the season, defeating Bridgewater, 8-1.
The Tigers set the tone for the day in the doubles matches, with Freshman
Barrett Foster (Virginia Beach, VA) and Senior Ty
ler Brice (Rocky Mount, NC) cruising to an 8-3 win in No. 1 doubles, while Freshmen
Matt Kendrick (Birmingham, AL) and
Frank Borden (Durham, NC) secured the No. 2 doubles win, 8-2. To round out the sweep, the Freshmen duo of
Henry Singleton (Richmond, VA) and
John Kendrick (Birmingham, AL) fought hard to earn the 8-5 victory.
Hampden-Sydney carried that momentum into singles by taking five of the six matches, with Singleton winning in straight sets, 6-0, 6-1 in his No. 4 match and J. Kendrick winning 6-2, 6-0 in No. 6 singles. In the No. 3 match, Freshman
Taylor Fox (Virginia Beach, VA) prevailed in straight sets 6-2, 6-1, which was followed by a M. Kendrick win at No. 5, 6-2, 6-2. In the No. 2 match, Brice lost the first set but fought back for the win 2-6, 6-3, 10-5. In the lone loss of the day, Foster dropped a 7-5, 6-1 decision to one of the top players in the ODAC.
With the win, the Tigers move to 7-8 overall, but most importantly, 4-2 in the ODAC. They will return to action this Sunday as they host Roanoke College in another crucial conference match. First serve is set for Noon.
