LYNCHBURG, Va. – Hampden-Sydney swept the opening doubles matches, and split the singles, to earn a 6-3 win over the University of Lynchburg. The win capped off the weekend which saw the Tigers pick up two conferences wins, while going undefeated in doubles play. Today featured a freshmen heavy line-up that was able to take advantage of a number of scoring opportunities.
The freshmen duo of
Barrett Foster (Virginia Beach, VA) and
MattÂ
Kendrick (Birmingham, AL) earned Hampden-Sydney their first point of the day, winning the No. 1 doubles match by a score of 8-5. A few minutes later, the Tigers added another point when Junior
Patrick Conde (Virginia Beach, VA) and
FreshmanÂ
Taylor Fox (Virginia Beach, VA) won the No. 3 doubles, 8-4. The doubles concluded with Freshmen
Henry Singleton (Richmond, VA) and
Frank Borden (Durham, NC) earning a hard fought 8-7 victory to give Hampden-Sydney the doubles sweep.
Â
Kendrick and Fox kept the momentum going into the singles matches with Kendrick winning at No. 5 in straight sets, 6-3, 6-0, while Fox prevailed in the No. 2 match, 6-4, 6-1. The Hornets would grab a point in the No. 3 singles match after Borden fell, 6-2, 6-2, but Singleton would earn another point for the Tigers by winning in No. 5 singles, 7-5, 6-2. His point guaranteed the overall victory for Hampden-Sydney even tough Foster dropped his No.1 match, 6-4, 7-5. However, the Tigers would have to wait to celebrate, as Conde came back to force a third set in No. 6 singles, but eventually fell, 4-6, 6-2, 0-1.Â
This is the second straight win for Hampden-Sydney this weekend and it evens up their season record at 6-6. It was also the Tigers' third ODAC win, moving them to 3-1 in the conference. The team will return to action next Saturday as they travel to Virginia Beach to face Virginia Wesleyan. First serve is scheduled for 3:00pm.
