Hampden-Sydney Rolls Past Averett 15-3

Trey Karnes enjoys a career day with four hits and five RBIs

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. -- Senior captain Trey Karnes (Mechanicsville) had a career-high four hits, including a double, with a career-high five RBIs to lead Hampden-Sydney College to a 15-3 non-conference baseball home win past Averett University on Wednesday afternoon on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Junior Ethan Currin (Toano) added two hits and two RBIs, sophomore Cameron Shields (Scottsville) also had two RBIs, and sophomore Ryan Portes (Midlothian) earned the pitching win for the host Tigers (5-2) against the visiting Cougars (1-8) in a game called after eight innings due to darkness.

H-SC had 15 runs on 17 hits with two errors … scoring three runs in the first inning, five runs in the second, one run in the fourth, three runs in the sixth, one run in the seventh and two runs in the eighth. AU scored three runs on five hits with one error … scoring one run in the first inning and two runs in the sixth.

Karnes (4-4, 5 RBIs) enjoyed his finest collegiate performance with a run-scoring infield single in the first to plate the first run for the Tigers, adding a two-run single up the middle in the second, then an RBI double off the wall in straight-away center field near the 405 sign in the fourth, before adding another run-scoring single up the middle in the seventh. He also scored two runs on the day and drew a walk, as well.

Currin (2-3, 2 RBIs) had a sacrifice fly RBI to center field in the first, along with an RBI double to left field in the second, while Shields (1-2, 2 RBIs) provided a pinch-hit, two-run single to left field in the sixth. Senior Ethan Badin (Richmond) (2-2, RBI) contributed an RBI single to right field in the second, freshman Johnny Oates II (Chester) (1-2, RBI) had a sac fly RBI to right field in the first, sophomore Tymothy Hart (Powhatan) (1-2, RBI) had a sac fly RBI to center field in the eighth, junior captain Ryan Boyce (Suffolk) (1-4, RBI) had a run-scoring triple to left field in the sixth, and freshman Grayson Harris (Moseley) (1-1, RBI) had a pinch-hit RBI single to right field in the eighth.

Portes (2-0) started and pitched the first 4.0 innings on a scheduled staff day that included five pitchers, scattering three hits and one run, earned, with four strikeouts and no walks. Junior Russell Bowles (Moseley) tossed a scoreless and hitless inning, striking out three of the four batters he faced with no walks. Freshman Jack Severt (Church Road) also pitched a scoreless inning, allowing one hit with two strikeouts and no walks. Senior Kieran Conway (Chesapeake) tossed a scoreless and hitless inning, as well, with one strikeout and no walks.

H-SC will play its first Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opponent of the season on Saturday, March 5, hosting Washington and Lee University at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium for a conference doubleheader beginning at 11 a.m.
