HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va – The Hampden-Sydney College Tennis team played their second straight home match this week, hosting Averett University at the H-SC Tennis Courts. Both teams came into today on a winning streak, but it was the Cougars who would continue their's, defeating the Tigers by an overall score of 8-1.
Hampden-Sydney fell behind early in doubles as Freshman
Barrett Foster (Virginia Beach, VA) and Senior
Tyler Brice (Rocky Mount, NC) dropped a close match, 8-6.
Freshmen
Frank Borden (Durham, NC) and
Matt Kendrick (Birmingham, AL) lost by the identical score, 8-6, in No. 2 doubles, while Freshman
Taylor Fox (Virginia Beach, VA) and
Freshman
Henry Singleton (Richmond, VA) fell by a final of 8-0.
After falling behind 3-0, the Tigers looked to regroup in the six singles matches, however, Foster lost a tight first set, 7-5 in No. 1 singles and then eventually fell in two sets, 7-5, 6-3. Brice also fell in straight sets 6-0, 6-0, as did Fox, 6-2, 6-3. Borden split the first two sets in No. 4 singles, but could not hold on in the third set, falling 6-3, 2-6, 0-1. Singleton tried to rally his team but came up short in his match, 6-4, 6-3. However, Kendrick would dominate in his match and grab the only point of the day for his team, winning No. 6 singles in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3.
Hampden-Sydney will have a day off on Saturday, and look to rebound Sunday, as they play their third match in five days, hosting Centre (KY) in a non-conference competition. Action is scheduled to begin at 1:00pm.
