HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – After a week in Florida, the Hampden-Sydney Tennis team brought back with them, both the weather and their winning streak, as they earned a 9-0 conference win over Randolph College. Wednesday was the first home match for the Tigers since Feb 25 and Coach
Byron Balkin was very pleased with his team's effort. "I am proud of the guys today and I know they played hard", said Coach Balkin. "Randolph came out ready to play and so did we. The momentum from spring break carried us into today and the more battles we are in, the better prepared we will be".
Hampden-Sydney earned their first point as a result of a forfeit in the No. 3 doubles match. The forfeit paved the way for the Tigers to sweep the first doubles session, as FreshmanÂ
Barrett Foster (Virginia Beach, VA) and Senior
Tyler Brice (Rocky Mount, NC) won 8-0 in No. 1 doubles, while fellow Freshmen
Frank Borden (Durham, NC) andÂ
Matt Kendrick (Birmingham, AL) won the No. 2 doubles match by a score of 8-1.
In the singles session, Borden and
FreshmanÂ
Henry Singleton (Richmond, VA) each held serve in their respective matches, winning 6-0, 6-0. In No. 1 singles, Foster played a tight first set, winning 7-5, but then cruised in the second set, prevailing 6-2, for the victory (7-5, 6-2). Over on the No. 2 singles court, Brice carried his doubles momentum into the match, securing the win 6-1, 6-3, while
FreshmanÂ
Taylor Fox (Virginia Beach, VA) had the toughest match of the day at No. 3 singles, grinding out the win, 6-0, 4-6, 1-0 (7). The ninth, and final point, was earned after a Wildcats forfeit in the No. 6 singles match.
The win improves Hampden-Sydney to 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in the ODAC. They will return to action this Friday afternoon, as they host Averett University at the H-SC Tennis Courts. First serve is scheduled for 2:00pm.
