Sean Duffy (Ambler, PA) posted a career-high seven goals, adding one assist, to lead nationally-ranked No. 16 Hampden-Sydney College to a 19-11 season-opening and non-conference lacrosse victory past Southern Virginia University on Saturday at Fulton Field at Lewis C. Everett Stadium. Sophomores
Ray O'Brien (Scituate, MA) and
Ford Burke (Richmond) each added three goals, with Burke contributing two assists and O'Brien one assist for the host Tigers (1-0) who led 11-8 at halftime against the visiting Knights (0-1).
H-SC, ranked 16th in this week's
Inside Lacrosse Division III Top 20, yielded the first two goals of the game to SVU before closing the quarter on a 7-1 run to lead 7-3 after one quarter. Freshman
Zach Hanzlik (Vienna) (1g) opened the scoring for the Tigers with his first collegiate goal at 11:42, assisted by Burke (3g, 2a). O'Brien (3g, 1a) scored his first goal of the season at 9:46, assisted by Duffy (7g, 1a), and after another score by the Knights, Burke tallied his first goal of the season and at the College with 6:57 on the clock, unassisted. Duffy scored his first goal of the season at 6:17, assisted by Burke, and the hosts had a lead that they would not relinquish. Burke scored again on his own at 5:47, and Duffy added back-to-back goals at 5:20 and 3:29, assisted by sophomore
Patrick Saunders (Alexandria) (1g, 1a) and senior captain
Bobby Clagett (Brandywine, MD) (1g, 2a), respectively.
SVU took a narrow 5-4 advantage in scoring during the second quarter to provide for the 11-8 score at the break. H-SC received goals during the quarter from Clagett, Duffy, O'Brien and Saunders, the first two unassisted, while the Tigers gained assists from
junior Max Koontz (Winston-Salem, NC) (1a) and junior
Kevin Marshall (Mt Pleasant, SC) (1a).
H-SC took complete control with a 5-1 scoring advantage in the third quarter … getting two unassisted goals from Duffy sandwiched around an unassisted score from distance by goalie
Will Perry (Roanoke) (2g) when SVU left the net unattended. Burke scored again about halfway through the quarter, assisted by O'Brien, to make it a 15-8 lead at 7:44. Junior
Nick Morgan (Issaquah, WA) (1g) added an unassisted goal to close out the scoring in the third quarter for a 16-9 margin.
The Tigers added three more goals in the final quarter as Duffy scored again without an assist, O'Brien scored with help from Clagett, and Perry closed it with another goal on his own from distance for a 19-10 advantage. SVU tallied a late goal to provide for the final margin.
Perry started and played the first 58:57 in goal, yielding11 goals with 12 saves for the win. Sophomore goalie

Conor Kilfeather (Wyndmoor, PA) was 7-15 on face-offs, and collected five ground balls, while senior captain
Presley Miller (Annapolis, MD) was 6-16 on face-offs with three ground balls. Senior captain

Grayson Ackaway (Virginia Beach) added three caused turnovers, as well.
H-SC remains at home for its next four games, as well, and will host non-conference opponent and No. 5 Christopher Newport University on Saturday, February 26, at 1 p.m. at Everett Stadium.
