NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Hampden-Sydney College dropped an 8-1 season-opening and non-conference tennis decision on the road at Christopher Newport University on Friday night in Newport News. Freshman Barrett Foster (Virginia Beach) garnered the point at No. 1 singles for the visiting Tigers (0-1), winning 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-7).

CNU (4-0) swept all three doubles matches, before taking five of the six singles matches. Foster and senior Tyler Brice (Rocky Mount, NC) fell at No. 1, 8-3, freshmen Matt Kendrick (Birmingham, AL) and Frank Borden (Durham, NC) fell at No. 2, 8-3, and freshman Henry Singleton (Richmond) and junior Patrick Conde (Virginia Beach) fell at No. 3, 8-1.

In addition to the singles win by Foster, Brice fell at No. 2 by scores of 6-4, 6-1; Borden fell at No. 3 by scores of 6-1, 6-0; freshman Charles Adams (Mechanicsville) fell at No. 4 by scores of 6-0, 6-0; Singleton fell at No. 5 by scores of 6-1, 6-0; and Conde fell at No. 6 by scores of 6-0, 6-0.

H-SC will return to action against Pfeiffer (NC) University on Friday afternoon, February 25, at 2 p.m. in its home opener at the H-SC Tennis Courts.
