SALEM, Va. -- Eighth-seeded Hampden-Sydney College fell in the semifinal of the Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) Men's Soccer Tournament, 2-0, to fourth-seeded Roanoke College on a rainy Wednesday night at Donald J. Kerr Stadium in Salem.
The Maroons came out on the offensive early getting shots often, but were unable to crack through the Tigers backline. The best chance of the first half came just before halftime whistle. There was a scramble play inside of the Tigers' box with a Maroon getting possession as sophomore goalkeeper Wills Huddleston (Baldwin, MD) was out of position going for the loose ball, forcing him to make an incredible acrobatic save to keep the game scoreless at half. Huddleston, in the first half saved all six of the shots that were put on net.
The second half started differently than the first, as the Tigers were the ones putting the pressure on the Maroons defense. With the pressure on the, the Maroons answered with a counterattack from sophomore Harrison Kraus that saw him beat a few Tiger defenders and place a shot into the top corner to beat Huddleston, breaking the deadlock after 55 minutes. In the 79th minute, the Maroons doubled their tally off a corner kick, as the ball fell straight to senior Nathan Carey inside the box and he powered it into the top of the net. With 10 minutes to go, H-SC went on an all out attack pushing forward to cut the deficit and hopefully equalize quickly after, but the pressure they put on Roanoke did not lead to a goal as the Tigers were defeated 2-0.
With the loss, H-SC bows out of the ODAC Men's Soccer Tournament in the semifinal, following its quarterfinal victory over the top-seeded University of Lynchburg. The Tigers went 9-7-3 overall and 3-5-2 in the ODAC.
