Hampden-Sydney Soccer Opens 2021 Season With 6-1 Win Over Pfeiffer

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – The Hampden-Sydney College soccer team opened its 2021 season with a 6-1 win over Pfeiffer University on Saturday evening at Hellmuth-Gibson Field. The Tigers saw goals from five different players as H-SC scored six goals in a game for the first time since October 4, 2013 in a 6-0 win over Emory & Henry. The Falcons drop to 1-1 on the season while the Tigers start off 1-0.

Junior Kade Wheeler/Blacksburg opened things up for H-SC with the first goal of the season at the 3:34 mark of the first half off a pass from sophomore Stefan Ngoh/Goldvein. Sophomore Emory Davis/Palmyra scored back-to-back goals, including the game-winner, less than two minutes apart at 18:42 and 20:37, to boost the Tigers' lead to 3-0. Freshman Justin Varela/Chesterfield assisted on the Davis' first goal, while Wheeler assisted on the second.

Just over three minutes later, Wheeler found sophomore Ben Beason/Cary, NC in the box and he gave the Tigers a 4-0 lead less than 25 minutes into the contest. With just over five minutes left in the first half, Pfeiffer scored what would be its lone goal of the game at 39:39.

Not wanting to let up, Ngoh pushed the Tigers ahead by four goals once again with a goal at 52:06 off a pass from classmate Ethan Farmer/Chesterfield. Junior transfer Michael Ogenyi/Virginia Beach finished off scoring in the game with his goal at 77:03 off a pass from sophomore Devin Kohout/Alexandria.

Senior Ian Fitzgerald/Newport News got his first career start, making seven saves in the win. The six assists by the Tigers also marked the first time since an 8-0 win over Berkeley College (NJ) on September 3, 2011 that the Tigers had six or more assists in a game (8).

H-SC will travel for its next game to Danville where they take on Averett University on Wednesday, September 8. The game with the Cougars is scheduled for 7 p.m.
