Hampden-Sydney Falls To Nationally-Ranked No. 12 Randolph-Macon 8-2

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. – Junior Trey Karnes/Mechanicsville and freshman Tillman Butler/Culpeper each had two hits and one RBI, but Hampden-Sydney College dropped an 8-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball decision to nationally-ranked No. 12 Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Freshman Aidan Williams/Suffolk took the pitching setback for the host Tigers (9-9, 6-7 ODAC) against the visiting Yellow Jackets (14-3, 11-0 ODAC).

H-SC scored two runs on 10 hits with three errors … scoring one run in the third and one in the sixth. R-MC had eight runs on nine hits with one error … scoring one run in the fifth, two in the sixth and five in the seventh.

In the third, junior Max Lipscomb/Virginia Beach (1-5) reached on an infield single and later scored on an RBI ground ball by Karnes (2-4, RBI).

In the sixth, senior captain Ryan Clawson/Moseley (2-4) singled to center field and later crossed the plate on a sacrifice bunt RBI by Butler (2-3, RBI).

Williams (0-1) started and pitched the first 5.0-plus innings, scattering five hits and three runs, all earned, with three strikeouts and one walk. Sophomore Owen Tappy/Charlotte, NC pitched 1.0-plus inning, yielding two hits and three runs, two earned, with no strikeouts and no walks. Junior Kieran Conway/Chesapeake pitched 1.0 inning, allowing one hit and two runs, one earned, with no strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Ryan Portes/Midlothian pitched 1.0 scoreless inning, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks. Freshman Ethan Snyder/Bumpass also pitched 1.0 scoreless inning, allowing one hit with one strikeout and two walks.

H-SC is scheduled to host Southern Virginia University on Saturday, April 10, for a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 12 p.m. at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium.
