Nick Grohowski/Chesterfield enjoyed a career day with seven hits and seven RBIs, including three hits and three RBIs in game one, and four hits and four RBIs in game two, to lead Hampden-Sydney College to an Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) baseball doubleheader sweep past Emory & Henry College on Saturday on Yank Bernier Field at the Ty Cobb Ballpark – Wurdeman Stadium. Ryan Boyce/Suffolk added two RBIs in the 8-6 opener that saw junior
Trenton Tiller/Powhatan gain the pitching win against the visiting Wasps (4-12, 3-12), while classmate
Trey Karnes/Mechanicsville added two hits and two RBIs in the 10-2 nightcap that witnessed sophomore
Justin Woodall/Mechanicsville earn the mound win for the host Tigers (14-9, 9-7), who have won five-straight and eight of their last nine games overall.
In game one on Senior Day, H-SC scored eight runs on 12 hits with no errors … scoring four runs in the first inning, two runs in the second, and two runs in the fifth. E&H scored six runs on 14 hits with one error … scoring one run in the second inning, one run in the fourth, two runs in the fifth, one run in the sixth and one run in the eighth.
In the first, Boyce (1-5, 2 RBIs) provided a two-run single up the middle that scored both freshman
Lucas Burnette/Hurt (2-5) and senior captain
Ryan Clawson/Moseley (1-4), who had each singled ahead of Boyce. Grohowski (3-4, 3 RBIs) later added a two-run single to left field that plated both Boyce and sophomore
Jay Beavers/Alexandria (1-3), who had been hit by a pitch—Boyce stole second base during the at-bat, as well.
In the second, Burnette singled with one out and Karnes was hit by a pitch, and both later crossed the plate on a throwing error. In the fifth, Grohowski added an RBI triple to right center field that scored freshman
Tillman Butler/Culpeper (2-3), who had reached on an infield single, and Grohowski crossed the plate courtesy of a run-scoring single to left field by junior
Max Lipscomb/Virginia Beach (2-5, RBI).
Tiller (2-3) started and pitched the first 5.0 innings for the victory, allowing eight hits and four runs, all earned, with four strikeouts and two walks—the first of six pitchers for the Tigers. Freshman
Ryan Portes/Midlothian pitched a scoreless inning, yielding two hits with no strikeouts and one walk. Classmate
Ethan Snyder/Bumpass recorded the game's final out for his first collegiate save, yielding no hits with no strikeouts and no walks.
In game two on Senior Day, H-SC scored 10 runs on a season-high 19 hits with one error … scoring one run in the second inning, two runs each in the third, fourth and fifth innings, one run in the sixth and two more runs in the eighth. E&H scored two runs on seven hits with three errors … scoring one run in the third inning and one run in the seventh.
In the second, Clawson (3-5) singled and later scored on a fielding error in right field. In the third, Grohowski (4-4, 4 RBIs) singled and later crossed the plate via a sacrifice fly RBI to right field by Burnette (1-4, RBI). Lipscomb (3-5), who had reached on an infield single and stole second base, scored on an RBI double down the left field line by Karnes (2-4, 2 RBIs). In the fourth, Grohowski provided a two-run double to left field that plated both Beavers (2-5) and Butler (1-4), who had each singled.
In the fifth, Grohowski added a two-run single to left field that scored both Clawson and Boyce (2-4), who had each singled with one out. In the sixth, it was Karnes with a run-scoring double down the left field line that plated Lipscomb, who had singled. In the eighth, Lipscomb single again and later scored via a passed ball, and Burnette, who had also singled, crossed the plate via a wild pitch.
Woodall (3-0) started and pitched the first 7.0 solid innings, scattering six hits and two runs, both earned, with four strikeouts and one walk. Junior
Kieran Conway/Chesapeake tossed 1.0 scoreless inning, yielding no hits with one strikeout and no walks, while Snyder pitched the final scoreless inning, yielding no hits with two strikeouts and one walk.

Matt Muehleck/Martinsville were recognized during a special ceremony between games of the doubleheader. The three Tiger seniors have led the program to a four-year overall record of 60-53-1, including 32-27-1 in ODAC action.
H-SC is scheduled to play on the road at ODAC opponent, archrival and nationally-ranked No. 12 Randolph-Macon College on Wednesday, April 21, at 3:30 p.m. in Ashland.
