LYNCHBURG, VA – The Hampden-Sydney soccer team won its third game in a row to start off the 2021 spring season with a 2-1 win over Randolph College on the road in Old Dominion Athletic Conference action Sunday evening. Freshmen Devin Kohout/Alexandria and John Alexander/Wake Forest, NC each scored for the Tigers.
The two teams played evenly through the first 33 minutes of play. However, a miscue on the right side of the box for the WildCats allowed Kohout to deflect a rebounded shot off the goalie and across the goal line to give the Tigers the 1-0 advantage at the 33:11 mark. Randolph was able to take two more shots in the first half before the break.
H-SC extended its lead at the 59:36 mark when Alexander took a slide tackle attempt on the ball by the WildCat defender in the box and was able to wrong foot the goalie to give the Tigers the 2-0 lead. Just over five minutes later, Randolph cut the deficit in half when Evan Blow took a pass. However, that was the last shot either team would take in the contest with the Tigers securing the 2-1 win.
Gray Sutter/Clinton, NC picked up fifth win in a row, dating back to last season. He made four saves in the win.
The Tigers (3-0, 3-0 ODAC) will return on home Sunday, March 14 when they host Virginia Wesleyan. The contest with the Marlines gets underway at 6 p.m. from Hellmuth-Gibson Field.
