RALEIGH, NC – The Hampden-Sydney College tennis team picked up its first win of the season with a 7-2 victory over William Peace on the road. With only five available players, the Pacers defaulted wins to the Tigers at #3 doubles and #6 singles. However, went on to pick up five more wins to secure the victory.
Senior Andrew Donelson/McLean and junior Tyler Brice/Rocky Mount, NC got things started at the top doubles spot with an 8-5 win over Dylan Betancourt and Ben Fleming. Right behind them was the freshman duo of Andrew Quick/Hillsborough, NC and Bryson Alley/Charlottesville with an 8-4 win over Joe Stephens and Dallas Russell.
With a 4-0 lead heading into singles, the Tigers did not let up against William Peace. Sophomore Patrick Conde/Virginia Beach clinched the match for H-SC with a quick, straight-set win over Dallan Russell, 6-1, 6-1. Donelson dropped his first set against Fleming at number two singles, 6-4, but rebounded in the second winning it, 6-0. With the match already decided the two played a match tiebreak in lieu of a third set. Donelson quickly got the win in the tiebreaker for the 4-6, 6-0, 1-0 (2) win. Slightly opposite, Quick won his first set over Stephens, 6-2, but dropped his second set, 6-3. In the match tiebreak, Quick gave up only three points for the 6-2, 3-6, 1-0 (10-3) win.
The Tigers (1-3) will return to Old Dominion Athletic Conference action on Thursday, March 25 when they travel to Randolph College. First serve against the WildCats is scheduled for 3 p.m. in Lynchburg.
