Hampden-Sydney Opens ODAC Play With 21-1 Win Over Randolph

LYNCHBURG, VA – The Hampden-Sydney lacrosse team did not disappoint in their Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) opener when it visited Randolph on Saturday afternoon. The Tigers jumped out early and often and easily pulled away for a 21-1 win over the host WildCats in Lynchburg.

Seven different Tigers scored multiple goals in the win led by Marshall Flagg/Williamsburg and Logan Mitchell/Mt. Pleasant, SC with three goals apiece.

H-SC opened with a pair of shots just over minute into the game. It would take just a minute longer before Jake O'Brien/Scituate, MA took a pass from Reilly French/Frederick, MD at 12:47 in the first quarter. The Tigers continued to score in the opening frame with goals from Jack Hayden/Apex, NC (11:42,9:31), Ray O'Brien, Scituate, MA (8:58), Mitchell (8:19, 3:22). Jake O'Brien scored his second goal of the period at 10:26.

Picking up where they left off, the Tigers found the back of the net at 12:21 in the second with Andrew Shanley/Leesburg took a pass from Mitchell to put the Tigers up 8-0. Flagg scored his first goal less than a minute later at 11:33. Shanley put the ball in the back of the cage just 15 seconds later after the Tigers won the faceoff, giving the visitors a 10-0 lead. H-SC went on to score six more goals before the half, having a 16-0 lead over the WildCats at intermission. Talmadge Hope/Richmond, Michael Leone/Vienna, Patrick Saunders/Alexandria, and Harry D'Agostino/Massillon, OH all scored for the Tigers in the period.

Luke Helfgott/Arlington opened up scoring for H-SC in the second half at 13:56, unassisted. It was not for nearly seven minutes that a goal was scored. Randolph scored its only goal of the game at 7:09 to trail 17-1. Helfgott scored his second goal at 2:27 to push the lead once again to 17 goals to extend the lead after three quarters, 18-1.

H-SC went on to score three more times in the fourth period with goals by Flagg (13:41), Leone (10:45), and Nick Scheer/Lakeville, MN (9:02).

Will Perry/Roanoke picked up his first win of the season, playing the first 15 minutes. William Schlager/Washington, DC (2nd quarter), Peter Smith/Warrenton (3rd quarter), and Holt Blythe/Virginia Beach each played 15 minutes in the victory. Smith finished with six saves and Blythe with one.

French, Mitchell and Aidan Byrne/Charlotte, NC each had two assists in the win while Kevin Marshall/Mt. Pleasant, SC, O'Brien, Teddy Harris/Roanoke, and Scheer each had one. The Tigers went a combined 17 for 25 on faceoffs.

H-SC (2-1, 1-0 ODAC) remains on the road on Saturday, March 20 when it visits Bridgewater College in ODAC play. The game against the Eagles gets underway at 1 p.m. in Bridgewater.
