VIRGINIA BEACH, VA – The Hampden-Sydney swimming team picked up a dual meet win over Virginia Wesleyan University, 183-53, Saturday afternoon on the road. This marked the lone dual meet of the season for the Tigers (1-0).
In the first event of the day, 400-yd medley relay, H-SC took the top two spots. The relay team of senior Zach Stephan/Hampton, junior Woody Parsons/Virginia Beach, and seniors AJ Howard/Washington, NC and Eric Hope/Norfolk finished first in a time of 4:01.71. The team of sophomore Andrew Rehak/Radford, senior Anthony Vinson/Richmond, junior Jason Covaney/Williamsburg, and freshman Patrick Duffy/Charlotte, NC completed the even in a time of 4:12.44.
Parsons finished first picked up his second in as many events finishing the 500-yd free in a time of 5:28.58. In the 200-yd freestyle, the Tigers took the top three spots with Rehak picking up his second win in a time of 2:04.28. Covaney and junior Ben Hiter/Mineral finished second and third in times of 2:09.31 and 2:13.29, respectively.
Duffy and sophomore Patrick Garifo/New London, NC finished second and third in the 50-yd backstroke with times of :31.99 and :33.10. H-SC took all three scoring spots in the 50-yd breaststroke with junior Dane Warner/Norfolk claiming the top spot in a time of :32.45 while Rehak finished second in a time of :34.87. Sophomore Ryan Foresman/Charlottesville came in third in a time of :36.09.
The 50-yd freestyle saw the Tigers finish first, third, and fifth as Hope, Hiter, and Foresman all scored points for H-SC. Stephan secured his second event win of the afternoon in the 100-yd freestyle in a time of :50.52. Duffy (:59.84) and Hiter (1:01.10) finished second and third, respectively.
Parsons earned his third win of the day with a win in the 100-yd breaststroke in a time of 1:12.93, narrowly defeating Warner (1:12.93). Howard (:25.80), Covaney (:26.16), and Hope (27.08) claimed the top three spots in the 50-yd butterfly.
In the final event of the day, the team of Howard, Vinson, Hope, and Stephan won the 200-yd freestyle relay in a time of 1:36.14. Hiter, Garifo, Foresman, and Warner finished third in the event with a time of 1:48.38.
The Tigers will wrap up the season at the 2021 Old Dominion Athletic Conference Championship on Friday, March 5 and Sunday, March 7 at the Liberty University Natatorium in Lynchburg.
