Hampden-Sydney Wins Opener Over Southern Virginia, 21-16

BUENA VISTA, Va. – Pre-Season All-American by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) Jared Medwar/Apex, NC tallied six goals and an assist to lead the Hampden-Sydney College lacrosse team to a season opening win over Southern Virginia University on the road in Buena Vista. It had been 346 days since the Tigers' last competition during the pandemic shortened 2020 season.

H-SC quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead just over two minutes into the contest. Senior Sean Duffy/Ambler, PA opened the run on an unassisted goal just 26 seconds in. He then assisted on classmate Reilly French/Frederick, MD goal just over 30 seconds later. continued the run at 12:57 mark in the first. Duffy scored his second goal at 12:36 in the opening quarter. Senior Jake O'Brien/Scituate, MA and Junior Bobby Clagett/Brandywine, MD closed out the Tiger scoring at 8:57 and 0:10, respectively.

Both teams played even during the second period, with each scoring four goals. The Tigers secured goals from senior Charlie Doetzer/Holly Springs, NC, junior Grayson Ackaway/Virginia Beach, Clagett, and Medwar. H-SC headed into the break leading the Knights, 10-7.

SVU scored the first three goals of the second half, knotting the score up at 10-10 at the 11:34 mark. The Tigers responded by retaking the lead with a trio of their own goals by French, Medwar, and Duffy. The two teams then traded goals with Medwar scoring his second goal of the quarter and third of the game. The Knights closed the gap with a goal with just 22 seconds left on the clock, but the Tigers still led 14-12 heading into the final quarter.

Five different Tigers scored seven goals in the fourth quarter with O'Brien and Medwar each scoring a pair while Duffy, French, Clagett each adding one. Medwar's first goal of the quarter to put the Tigers up 17-13 proved to be the game-winner.

Senior William Schlager/Washington, DC (1-0) earned his first win of the season making four saves. Junior Will Perry/Roanoke played the fourth quarter for the Tigers, making three saves. Senior Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, PA went 19-39 at the faceoff for H-SC with sophomore Nick Thompson/Midlothian going 0-2. The Tigers had six assists on the afternoon with Medwar, Duffy, Brummett, Clagett, French and sophomore Nick Morgan/Issaquah, WA each tallying one.

H-SC returns home on Friday, February 26 when it hosts nationally-ranked #13 Christopher Newport University on Hellmuth-Gibson Field. The game against the Captains gets underway at 7 p.m.
