BRIDGEWATER, Va. -- Sophomore midfielder
Devin Kohout (Alexandria) scored the game-tying goal in the 76th minute to help Hampden-Sydney College to a 2-2 Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) men's soccer double-overtime tie at Bridgewater College on Saturday afternoon in Bridgewater. The visiting Tigers had trailed 1-0 at the intermission, and fell behind 2-0 in the second half, before rallying late against the host Eagles. H-SC also received a goal from junior midfielder
Jacob Siler (Charlotte, NC) while stopping a recent four-game losing streak and is now 4-6-2 overall, 1-4-1 in the ODAC. BC is now 5-6-2 overall, 1-3-2 in the ODAC.
"Incredible effort by the guys to battle back the way we did," explained fifth-year head coach
Tommy DiNuzzo. "After going down two goals with less than 20 minutes left, we were completely up against it and really showed the type of heart this program has been built on the past few years.
"The guys that subbed-on for us completely changed the game and
Jacob Siler was an inspiration for us among others. If we continue to play with this type of sense of urgency, not only will we find a way into the ODAC Tournament, but we will have the opportunity to beat anyone."
BC took its 1-0 advantage at halftime after the first of two goals on the day from Trevon Phillips at 32:35, unassisted. Senior keeper
Ian Fitzgerald (Newport News) made three first-half saves for H-SC to keep it close. Junior defender
Matt Johnson (Virginia Beach) had the only attempt on goal during the first 45 minutes by the Tigers on a corner kick opportunity.
The Eagles went ahead 2-0 on Phillips' second goal at 64:58, assisted by Luke Stubbs and Parker Richard.
The Tigers got on the scoreboard at 72:20 when Siler got his foot on a loose ball in the box to make it a 2-1 contest. It was Siler's second goal of the season and fourth of his collegiate career. The visitors kept their momentum just minutes later when Kohout tallied his first goal of the season, and second of his collegiate career, at 75:53. The game-tying goal was assisted by junior forward
Michael Ogenyi (Virginia Beach), whose attempt on goal was stopped by the keeper but collected by Kohout and promptly placed into the net. It was third assist this fall for the first-year team member, Ogenyi. The Garnet and Grey had another scoring opportunity in the 83rd minute by senior midfielder/forward
Paul Mahaffy (Yorktown), but it was stopped by the Eagles' keeper, while junior forward
Attila Buri (Leesburg) had a shot attempt stopped earlier in the half, as well.
H-SC took four shots in the first 10-minute extra period, though none were on goal, and the Tigers added five more shots in the second overtime with two on goal that were both saved—the first by junior forward
Josiah King (South Boston) and the second by junior midfielder
Boyce Purdie (Clinton, NC). Fitzgerald stopped the lone shot attempt on goal by the hosts during the second OT.
Fitzgerald started in front of the net for the visitors and played the entire contest (110:00), finishing with four saves.
H-SC took a 30-11 advantage in shots against BC, including 8-6 in attempts on goal, and the Tigers had an 8-3 edge in corner kicks.
H-SC and BC were meeting for the 31st time in the sport, and the Tigers continue to lead the all-time series, 22-6-3.
H-SC returns home to welcome ODAC member Ferrum College on Wednesday night, October 20, at 7 p.m. at Hellmuth-Gibson Field. It's the program's
Breast Cancer Awareness Game with donations being accepted for cancer research.
