FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – A trio of Tigers each scored five goals as the Hampden-Sydney College Lacrosse team opened the 2020 season with a 21-13 win over the University of Mary Washington on the road. Senior Jack Hayden/Apex, NC and juniors Jared Medwar/Apex, NC and Jake O'Brien/Scituate, MA found the back of the cage five times apiece in the victory the Tigers (1-0). Kevin Cruz scored three goals for the host Eagles (0-1) in the non-conference contest.
H-SC scored the first two goals of the game with O'Brien (9:58) and Hayden (7:43) scoring off assists by Medwar and sophomore Sean Duffy/Ambler, PA, respectively. UMW would pull even with a pair of goals before the Tigers took the lead again at 3-2, thanks to O'Brien's second goal of the game at 5:47 in the first quarter. The Eagles would take their only lead of the game at 4-3 at the 4:18 mark of the quarter before H-SC would go on to score four-straight goals, a stretch that lasted into the second quarter. Medwar scored the first of his five goals to begin the Tigers' run just eight seconds after the Eagles scored. Duffy gave H-SC the lead for good just over a minute later off a pass from junior Reilly French/Frederick, MD with 3:00 left in the period. Senior Garrett Patnesky/Raleigh, NC finished the period with an unassisted goal at the :37 mark.
The Tigers tallied four of the six goals scored in the second quarter to lead 11-6 at the intermission. O'Brien scored his third goal at 12:04, assisted by French. Medwar added his second and third goals of the contest at 5:04 and 2:21, respectively, off assists by French and Hayden. Duffy became the third Tiger to score three goals in the half with a pair of goals at 3:07 and 1:27; the first being assisted by sophomore Bobby Clagett/Brandywine, MD.
H-SC continued to outdistance UMW scoring six goals in the third quarter to just four for the hosts. Junior Charlie Doetzer/Holly Springs, NC scored for the Tigers at 13:18, assisted by Duffy. O'Brien followed at 10:42 with Hayden assisting. The Tigers scored a man-down goal at the 9:58 minute mark when Medwar passed to Hayden to extend the visitors lead. O'Brien closed out his scoring on the day just over a minute later at 8:55 off an assist from French. Doetzer scored his second goal at 1:30, assisted by Clagett. Hayden concluded the scoring in the quarter just six seconds later off a pass from junior Jake Brummett/Glen Rock, PA.
Hayden continued the momentum for H-SC scoring a man-up goal with 14:21 left in the game, unassisted. Medwar scored unassisted as well less than a minute later at the 13:46 mark. Hayden scored his fifth goal of the game at 9:35, assisted by French. Medwar scored the last goal in the contest with 6:26 left, unassisted.
Senior Nick Arcuri/Apex, NC played 50:25, picking up the win, yielding 11 goals, making 13 saves. Brummett went 17 for 32 in face-offs (53.1%) for the Tigers, adding a game-high 14 groundballs as H-SC took a 39-37 advantage.
In addition to the ground balls, H-SC led in saves (15-8) and clears (22-19). The Tigers scored on two of their four man-up situations, holding the Eagles to just one of eight circumstances. H-SC had 13 caused turnovers, led by junior Canevin Wallace/Annapolis, MD with three.
H-SC will return to campus for its home opener against Catholic University on Wednesday, February 19, a non-conference contest at 5 p.m.
